The Barbary Coast Theatre

A Seat On History… or … The Behind-The-Seat Story

Even though the Barbary Coast Theater is relatively new to Monterey, the theater is now beginning its forty-fourth year as a place for fun and laughter. It also claims to be Unique in All The World!

The Opry House had been an addition to the Casa Grande Mansion in the mining town of New Almaden. The Mansion was built in 1854 as a home and entertainment center for the manager of the Quicksilver Mines. The mines produced quicksilver, or mercury, well into the 20th century. The small rural community known as New Almaden is a delightful tiny town in the midst of busy and growing San Jose. There is a museum, a post office, and a restaurant. When The Opry House was operating, it and the restaurant were the only commercial businesses in the little town. People came from all over the Bay Area to attend the shows at The Opry House. Many enjoyed the get-away-from-it-all atmosphere of the country setting.
