for BLACK BELT CANDIDATE test eligibility: |

C Black Belt Candidate test may be taken as often as necessary; at least one week of training must take place before another attempt with no absences allowed during this week |
C Student will be promoted to BLACK BELT CANDIDATE with a new belt (red belt with black stripe through the middle of the belt) |
C Black Belt Evaluation with GM Park will be scheduled at next available testing after successfully passing Black Belt Candidate test |
C Black Belt Test with GM Park will be scheduled at next available testing after successfully passing Black Belt Evaluation |

Please note: Do NOT expect the Black Belt Candidate test to be easy or an automatic pass. If you are prepared, you will pass. Preparation means: |
C Forms = have close to exact stances, good power, smooth transitions, good balance; do not rush; no mistakes (3 attempts will be allowed - practice at home is expected) |
C 1-Steps & self-defense = smooth, convincing, “automatic” and not deliberated |
C Korean terminology and commands are known |
C Absence from training is the exception |

Grandmaster Park expects all students to consistently train approximately three hours weekly, minimum. Following are the requirements for seeking a Black Belt rank at Barbeau/J Park Tae Kwon Do Center at Hapkido International, 1240a Highland Avenue, Clearwater, Florida: |

C REQUIREMENTS FOR BECOMING - BLACK BELT CANDIDATE (a new rank) with Master Barbeau:Complete 5 month anniversary date with regular attendance since Probationary Black Belt testing (3rd Black Stripe) |
|
C Expected regular attendance is defined as 75% of scheduled classes for teens/adults and 50% for children between student’s individual rank level testings. A minimum of 45 hours of class training during this 5 month period is expected. If a student is absent several times for two (2) or more consecutive classes, testing may be jeopardized due to insufficient training and preparation time. (Private lessons for additional training time may be available from the Master Instructor at the current rate.) |

C Display the proper martial arts attitude through consistent attendance, hard effort, martial arts spirit, and good character. |
C Demonstrate reasonably good mental conditioning (e.g., good martial arts spirit, dedication to the sport of Tae Kwon Do, and reasonable understanding of the art of Tae Kwon Do and related Korean terminology). |
C Be present at all special black belt/3rd black stripe classes which are scheduled by Master Barbeau. |

Once the above are thought to be present and the student feels ready, the student can then approach the Master Instructor and request an examination form. At that time a preliminary examination will be scheduled AT NO CHARGE by the Master Instructor. Satisfactory completion of this preliminary examination will be indicated by the student’s satisfactory demonstration of all of the above in addition to the following activities at the preliminary examination: |
C Perform at least three required poomse/forms with particular attention to perfect stances, power, coordination and balance. |
C Perform 1-step sparrings - convincingly and smoothly, as follows: |
C Age 12 and under: six (6 ) 1-step sparrings |
C Ages 13-16: ten (10) 1-step sparrings |
C Age 17 and older: twenty (20) 1-step sparrings |
C Demonstrate lower rank forms (green belt level through 2nd black stripe level) as follows: |
C Age 12 and under: one (1) additional form |
C Ages 13-16: two (2) additional forms |
C Age 17 and over: three (3) additional forms |
C Demonstrate reasonably good physical conditioning (e.g., such as being able to walk, jog or run at least one mile without stopping or the equivalent combination of exercises, at the Master Instructor’s discretion). |

A minimum of one (1) week must separate each attempt. The successful Probationary Black Belt will be promoted to BLACK BELT CANDIDATE by the Master Instructor and will be scheduled for the formal evaluation at the next regular general testing opportunity. |

ELIGIBILITY TO SCHEDULE - BLACK BELT FORMAL EVALUATION with Grandmaster J. H. Park |
C Complete 6 month anniversary date with regular attendance (see definition above) since Probationary Black Belt testing (3rd Black Stripe) |
C Prior successful PROMOTION to BLACK BELT CANDIDATE. |
C Be prepared to repeat at testing all of the above requirements for BLACK BELT CANDIDATE (Note: same attendance guidelines apply - regular attendance is mandatory). |
C Demonstrate hand self-defense, gun and knife defense techniques, and most 1-Step sparring techniques |
C Be prepared to demonstrate fighting/sparring techniques. |
C Be prepared to demonstrate required board breaking techniques. |
C The student may formally evaluate as many times as necessary. Grandmaster Park charges a test fee for each black belt evaluation. |
C Be present at all special black belt/3rd black stripe classes which are scheduled by Master Barbeau. |

C Successful completion of the BLACK BELT FORMAL EVALUATION with GM Park |
C Be prepared to repeat all of the above requirements for BLACK BELT FORMAL EVALUATION |
C Black belt test will typically be scheduled at the next general testing opportunity following date of successful BLACK BELT FORMAL EVALUATION. (Note: same attendance guidelines apply). |
C Complete all paperwork and hand in test fees three (3) weeks prior to Black Belt testing date. (Failure to do so may cast doubt about your dependability and seriousness in joining the black belt ranks and result in postponing your Black Belt test indefinitely). |

SPECIAL NOTE TO BLACK BELT CANDIDATES |
ALL BLACK BELT CANDIDATES & ASSISTANT INSTRUCTOR CANDIDATES are to prepare a 1 & ½, double spaced, typed essay on Tae Kwon Do to read at their BLACK BELT TESTING, and should address: |
1. What becoming a black belt or assistant instructor means to you |
2. How TKD has helped you. |
3. Include thanks to the Grandmaster, your Master, other assistant instructors or black belts |
4. Include your commitment to continue training in TKD, perfecting your marital art skills, your character, and service to the sport of TKD. |
5. Include your commitment to advancing in rank and become part of teaching staff, assisting your Master Instructor. |
** Three (3) weeks BEFORE THE TEST, bring the following: |
* Four (4) small (cir. 1x2") pictures (for children/teens, left-over school pictures work well - only head shot used) |
* Three (3) copies of your TAE KWON DO ESSAY |
* Test check made payable to MASTER BARBEAU (See him for cost) |

C Be prepared to demonstrate ALL 1-STEP SPARRINGS smoothly and convincingly. |
C Be prepared to demonstrate several HAND SELF DEFENSE TECHNIQUES, including front and back grabs. |
C Be prepared to demonstrate several KNIFE & GUN DEFENSE TECHNIQUES. |
C Prepare ESSAY (as outlined above) and ONE (1) PICTURE, full length, in dobok and dhee. |
C Be prepared to demonstrate “teaching” any technique, form, hand or foot attack or defense, according to the Master Instructor’s discretion and direction. |
