"Yes, Harbade, we do. But the Captain would like to speak with you, herself." Tuvok replied.
Janeway walked onto the bridge. "Thank you, Tuvok," she said as she turned towards the viewscreen.
"Do you have the girl Janeway?" Harbade asked again.
"Yes, we have Kayla, Harbade. I request your permission to keep her on my ship for a day or two."
"Granted, Janeway," Harbade replied before she could explain. "You may have her for three days, or return her sooner if you get tired of the little Potac." He flicked his fingers at the screen as if her didn't care about Kayla. "And then she is to return here. Is that understood?"
"Yes, Harbade. Thank you," Janeway smiled
gratefully and
Harbade terminated the transmission. Janeway
frowned,
wondering where Harbade had learned a Klingon
insult.
"Starfleet killed my mother when i was younger," Kayla replied. She was wandering around the room admiring Kes' things, but now she put down the diamond faceted rock she was examining and turned to Kes.
"What about Chakotay?" Kes asked.
"He killed my father." Hatred flashed again into her eyes. She turned away and opened a small jewlery box.
"I'm sorry, Kes, but i don't wanna talk about it." She snapped the jewlery case closed and walked out of the room.
Kayla heard the door hiss behind her and looked down each hallway. She shrugged and walked to the left. She heard the door hiss open again and sprinted down the hallway. When she had finally lost Kes, she stopped running to catch her breath. A few minutes later, she looked at her surroundings. All the hallways looked exactly the same.
People dressed in starfleet uniforms were scattered throuout the hallway. Some were talking and others were walking. She leaned against the wall. Oh, great, she thought, i'm on this ship for less than three hours and already i'm lost.
"Do you require assistance?" a tall woman with a tight gray jumpsuit on asked her.
Kayla jumped at the sound of her voice, then let out a deep sigh. She put her hand up and shook her head. "No, i'm fine, thanks," she said with a fake grin. She turned to walk away and slammed into someone. She looked up at the person in the gold uniform and recognized him as the person she had met on the planet. She tried to walk around him, but he darted in front of her. She decided to try an old human trick. She started to go left, and, when he tried to block her path, she moved quickly past him to the right. She ran down the hallway as fast as she could, startled officers jumping out of her way. She felt two hands around her waist pulling her back. "Kayla," she heard him say. This guy looks small, but he sure is strong, she thought. Just not strong enough. She jammed her elbow into his stomach and he yelped softly and let go. She smiled and started running again.
Harry grabbed his stomach with both hands. Realizing his mistake, he groaned and made himself stand upright. No wonder they asked us to get her, he thought as he started chasing her again.
Kayla glanced behind her for the Ensign. No sign of him. She smiled, but didn't have time to turn around before she bumped into someone else.
"Oops," she said as she felt two strong arms grab her. She looked up and a tall dark man with pointed ears looked back down at her. His expression was blank, and he wore the same uniform as the Ensign.
"You can let me go ya' know. Everyone on this dumb ship knows who i am. I got noplace to go."
He seemed to consider this for a moment, and then his grip loosened. "Logical, Kayla," he said with no feeling in his deep voice.
The Ensign came around the corner, breathing hard. "Ah, Tuvok. I see you found her." He rubbed his tender stomach.
Kayla smiled and wiggled her arms free of Tuvok's grasp. She held her hand out to the ensign and smiled gently. "Sorry," she said.
Harry looked at the hand strangely, but then took it. Something flashed in Kayla's eyes when he touched her hand. He thought he saw her blush briefly, but her skin was so dark it was hard to tell.
Janeway rounded the corner with another tall man. Kayla looked up at him. Red uniform this time, she noticed.
"Ah, i see you have her under control," Janeway said. "Tom, will you show her around the ship?" She looked to the man standing next to her.
He looked back at her and nodded his head. "Sure, Captain," he said. He looked at Kayla. He held out his hand to her and smiled. "Tom Paris," he said.
Kayla didn't take his hand, but, rather, stared at him in disbelief. "Kayla, as if you didn't know."
Harry winced and pressed a hand to his stomach again. "Are you allright, Harry?" Janeway asked. Harry closed his eyes and nodded in response. "Go to sickbay anyway," she said, sounding worried.
"But, Captain, I-" he argued.
"That's an order, Ensign." she accented the word ensign as if to remind him of his rank so that he fully understood. Paris smiled slightly.
"Aye, Captain," he said reluctantly, turning and walking away. She nodded at Tuvok. "Back to the bridge, Mr. Tuvok," she said, walking away. Tuvok turned and followed her.
Kayla made a mental note that the tall dark guy with the ears was Tuvok, and the Ensign was Harry. Paris led her in the opposite direction thanthe others went.
"He's Vulcan," he offered.
"What?" Kayla asked, a little surprised.
"Tuvok," he said simply, "He's Vulcan." Kayla nodded as Paris pointed out different rooms. After they had explored about half of one deck, Paris' stomach began to growl. He touched Kayla's arm and she stopped, jerking away.
"What?" she snapped
Paris simply raised his eyebrows. "You hungry?" he asked. It had been a couple of days since she had eaten. Most of the food she stumbled upon she gave to her dog. ToTo. A picture of ToTo flashed into her head. "ToTo!" her eyes widened and she looked up at Paris. "Mr. Paris, we have to get ToTo!" she said, panic in her voice.
Paris smiled at her. "We can eat first. And call me Tom, alright?"
"Ok, Tom, we can't eat first. He'll go back to the city looking for me and they'll kill him!" She tugged on his sleeve. "Please?" she asked. Her bottom lipstarted to tremble slightly. Afraid she might start crying, Paris nodded.
"Okay, alright, we'll get the dog," he said quickly. "C'mon." He didn't want to touvch her again so he jerked his head at the turbolift he had purposfully stepped in front of. He stepped inside. Kayla looked at it and chewed her bottom lip. "It's perfectly safe," he assured her. She stepped on and the doors slid closed. He ordered it to the right deck and they stepped off again. They walked down a long hallway.
"Where are we going?" Kayla asked.
"To see the Captain," he replied.
They stepped through a set of doors and a few heads turned to look at them. The Captain's included, Kayla noticed.
"Tom," she began. She looked at Kayla questioningly.
"Captain, she's worried about her dog, ToTo. I was wondering if maybe we could beam him aboard the ship," he suggested.
Janeway looked at Kayla. Her eyes pleaded with the captain and she took a brave step forward.
"Captain, please," she said calmly, even though Chakotay stared at her from behind Janeway. "If we don't then he'll go back to the city looking for me and they'll kill him," she pleaded, telling Janeway what she had told tom. Even Chalotay's face softened.
Janeway glanced back at her first officer and got a single nod of his head in reply. She turned to Kayla. "Alright," she said, smiling gemtly. Kayla grinned. "Tom, escort Kayla to the transporter room. Tuvok, get a lock on the dog and beam it up to the ship." She turned back to Kayla. "You understand that the dog has to stay out of the corridors, right?" Kayla nodded.
"C'mon, kid," Paris instructed.
They walked down more hallways and through a set of doors. Kayla looked around her. A tall woman stood behind a console. She smiled strangely at Tom. To her left was a platform with six little circles on it. The blue beam that had brought the captain, Chakotay, and the Ensign to the planet appeared again. When it dissapeared, little ToTo stood yapping in it's place.
Paris smiled at the joy that glistened in Kayla's eyes. She ran to the translporter and ToTo jumped into her arms. The small black terrier licked her face and Kayla grinned. She set him on the floor and he ran to sniff Paris' leg.
Paris watched the dog nervously. ToTo wagged his short tail and sat in front of Paris. He panted happily. Kayla picked him up again. "He likes you," she said, cuddling the animal in her arms. "Where should i take him?"
"Oh, right," Paris looked from thedrooling dog to Kayla. "This way," he jerked his head at the door and lead Kayla to her quarters. "There's the replicator," he said when the door hissed behind them. He glanced nervously at ToTo. "Please make sure the dog stays in here."
"I will," Kayla said, nuzzling ToTo and then setting him down on the floor. "Now, should we go get lunch?" she smiled up at him.
"Good idea," he said.
