The Electric Spin Cycle

A week (?) or so ago (I have no idea, I am going on vacation to a warmer sunnier place with lots of tequila in three weeks, so I have lost all track of specifics) Smirk and Tom Brokaw had a little chat:

Tom Brokaw: "You talk a lot about the energy crisis, but you've talked about it almost exclusively as the need to produce more energy. There's been very little talk about conservation. We have been on a buying and consumption binge in this country."

George W. Bush: "Well, I thought - listen, I believe we need to conserve. I mean, I think we need to have incentives to encourage people to insulate their homes better. I think we need to make sure industry does not, you know, is not wasteful, not question about it.  But I'm realistic. We can't conserve our independence. I mean, you got an energy problem in California primarily caused by the fact there's no plants, and there's not enough to fuel the plants if there were new plants. We need to explore financial gas. I mean we need to be moving U.S. product. And so I think the two go hand in hand.  I was reading somewhere the other day, where we can get out of this crisis by more wind. Well, you know, that's an interesting thought, except our technology isn't enough to capture enough wind to be able to make sure our economy continues to grow. And so I strongly believe in conservation. I believe we made great progress in conservation. But I know if we don't find more product we're going to have a problem."

Did he really say “
explore financial gas”????  Yes, I’m afraid he did.

(Big Al Gore *sigh*) I cannot believe anyone lets this man speak in public.

FIRST OF ALL> there is not an energy 'shortage' here in California.  But thanks to the 'Spin-it-until-it-Sells' Media, we need Agent Mulder to find the Truth that is Out There.

The “Energy Crisis” is only in the places where deregulation made the utility companies like Edison and Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) succumb to corporate greed.

If you live in the city of Burbank for example, they have their own power source, so they are fine.  The city of Los Angeles (thankfully that's where I am - even in the valley) we are also fine.  Our power comes from the DWP - Department of Water & Power.  They all have plenty of power plants & stations, in fact, the DWP bought most of the ones that were closed, or needed big time rehab, repaired and brought those stations up to speed, as well as invested in building new plants as we speak, so we have TONS of power.  The companies like Edison & PG&E however made some very bad business decisions, & now they can't afford to buy the power they need to supply to their customers. Oooops!  Meanwhile the poor people who are unfortunate enough to live, work, drive through, or be hospitalized in those cities are pretty much screwed.

His comment about "wind" isn't far off in that it is a great source of power, if he only had traveled outside of the state of TX more and been sober while doing it - he might have a clue that indeed we do have the technology.  Along hwy 10 out towards Palm Springs, several years ago they set up hundreds of windmills (they're called Wind Farms) and that is where a large portion of power for southern CA comes from.  (Vegas is next door - hello - think they are hurting for power?)

It just amazes me how stupid people are.  Perhaps that's why so many people voted for Smirk - because they identify with him.  A large percentage of the intelligent population most likely looked at the election and thought, "My God, how can Gore lose?  Is that even possible?  Hmmm. Not in any law of physics that I can think of can Gore possible lose to this imbecile.  Why bother to vote?"

ok.... I am now wasting energy by rambling.
