Clothing: Shorts, not too many pants, it's really warm here year round. Cool shirts. No need for jackets or sweaters. The only jacket you will need is a light weight rain jacket with hood. You can get completely soaked in about 10 seconds when the Monsoon rain hits, but at least it's warm. The humidity means you don't dry quickly either. It is hard to get Quality clothing here though. Big people take note: Men, if you are foot size 12 or bigger, you will find it next to impossible to find shoes, flip flops or sandals. Large underwear is not European large, bring a good supply. Reading Material: Bring Newspapers, Magazines and BOOKS. The bookstores are poor here. Current newspapers are greatly appreciated by those that have been out for a while. Food Food is tricky, They don't have Clamatto juice here. You can't get hollandaise sauce and some other packets of sauce either. Chewing gum, you can't get Extra, Denteen or any good stuff here. Real Maple Syrop and Steak spice DVD's They will most likely take movies that have not already shown up on video store shelves in Male'. Unless you have a pork permit you could get pork sausage taken. But that's not their primary concern. Caution bringing DVD's they are liable to confiscation if found by the Customs people at the airport when they X-ray your baggage for contraband. They are typically looking for DVDs, VHS tapes, Liquor, etc. Clutter in the bag helps to mitigate the risk. Alcohol: If you have a liquor permit you can bring in your ration (3 litres & 60 cans of beer/month) They can see the liquor bottles on the x-ray machine and will confiscate it if you are trying to smuggle. Drugs, don't even think about it. Muslim cooutry, strict laws. Perscription drugs: Bring your nessecities. There are lots of pharmacies here so you can pick up stuff. You can't get Tylonol. There is a cheap supply of Silagra and Progra for cheap (Viagra copy) Eyewear: Don't worry about eye glasses. There are plenty of optometrists that will test your eyes and have saline solution. They also have the latest equipment. If you have favourite hair jells, product, etc. bring them. Gillette blades are cheap here. If you like quality bed sheets, bring your own. Same goes with pillows. Mobile Phone, bring your old one you, might be able to just plug in a sim chip from here. There is an excellent selection of Phones in Male' Dentist: Visit your trusted Dentist before you come. probably don't want any problems while you are here Pilots: Bring a multi-tool(Leatherman) for your belt, you will need it, Headset, (Kenn Borek uses the NATO plug so get an adapter). Pick up a Quality napsack at MEC and you can resell it to the Maldivian Cabin Attendants. |
