This book is a quality read for any science fiction fan, and a great introduction to the genre for those who are not yet into it.
Set several hundred years in the future, humanity has spread to most of the Sun's nearby stellar neighbours. Several extinct alien cultures have been discovered, but the reaons as to their extinction are unknown. Needless to say event conspire to bring about this information.
Reynolds's prose is exceptional, as is his originality. This isn't what many unfamilier to the genre would think of as space opera like Star Trek, but a dark, thrilling jouney into the not to distant future.
An engrossing read for all, and the first of what is now four books in the series.
