QinetiQ Puts Trimaran Up For Sale
UK defence company QinetiQ has put research vessel RV Trtion up for sale as it has been unable to secure trial work from the Ministry of Defence to justify continued research. RV Triton was launched in May 2000.

The trimaran design was initially seen as an interesting concept for use in naval warfare. As the Royal Navy website puts it: "There are numerous advantages of a trimaran hull form over conventional mono-hulls: reduced costs, reduced signature, significantly less drag leading to increased speed, increased length giving greater stability, and more area for the upper deck which could be used for the flight deck and hangars for helicopters and extra armament. It is possible that the wide upper deck will lead to the provision of a second hangar which could be used for other service helicopters such as the Apache for land attack, support or relief operations."

Unfortunately, a number of trials programmes and research packages for which Triton was a candidate platform, have been delayed or failed to materialise. Hence the sale.
