 Art Deco         Tunisia

An obvious influence on Art Deco was North African architecture, with white exteriors and rounded corners. French colonial Africa built many buildings in the deco style and many still survive.  Many were for official purposes but apartments in the deco style are also fairly common. These were often originally built for the colonial settlers, sometimes to encourage immigration. These examples are all from Tunisia but Algeria is likely to have many more examples. Asmara in Eritrea also has a number of art deco buildings, all built during the Italian occupation. The former Belgian Congo also has some art deco buildings, including the post office in Kinshasa. Casablanca has a sizeable art deco heritage.
