MICHAEL & TERE BATHAM'S HOMEPAGE

Departure of the Sea Quest from New Zealand. June 2002.  Destination Tahiti……
Share our adventures on this website updated in April 2005. We are now smack in the middle of the East Indies. The Asian Tsunami has devastated much of the best cruising ground.  Yachts are bottlenecked in this area. --- Recovery of Thailand and the political winds will determine our eventual course…..but there is no hurry…..

Michael and Tere returned to New Zealand in late 1998 after eight years exploring the Western Pacific Islands between NZ and Japan, taking a three year hiatus. Tere took the time to write a thrilling book about their travels, entitled Cruising Japan to New Zealand: The Voyage of the Sea Quest, now available through bookstores and the Internet. Cruising magazines around the world continue to feature the couple's informative articles.  More about Tere's new book.

March 2005

Hello Friends,
Only Fortune and our fascination with Borneo kept us out of the path of the Asian Tsunami. For that we thank all our lucky stars!
The area is still reeling, however. Local people as far away as West Malaysia run for high ground when the earth shakes a little, and we have had at least one tsunami warning that sent people into a panic and caused several heart attacks, but have not eventuated. Many yachts in the affected areas of Puket and Lankawi have delayed going on to Sri Lanca and the Maldives this year, as there is yet no infrastructure in those places to service these  yachts. We will stay in Borneo another year allowing time for a little recovery to take place.
In 2004 we spent several months away from the boat visiting family in New Zealand and the U.S. During that time my new book was released.
CRUISING JAPAN TO NEW ZEALAND: The Voyage of the Sea Quest.  Published by SheridanHouse.com. Reports from friends who have got a copy are filtering back to us and have been very exciting. See My Book Info.
For the rest of the year we plan to explore along the NW coast of Borneo, sail up some of the large river systems, and maybe take some inland excursions to observe jungle plants and wildlife up close.
