» CHAPTER NINE «
Do you believe in fortune cookies? Some people believe in them, some don’t.
But most of them only believe
when it’s
a good fortune, if it’s bad one or a warning of awareness around your surroundings,
people usually
just smile
and throw it away, the thing is...those are mostly true...
“Thanks.” I said to the waiter as he gives back my change and two fortune cookies.
“Let me see it!” I stretch my arm as far as possible to reach the other end of the table.
“No, I have to read it first!” Brian jerks the paper slip away. Brian and me have been going out for three months now. We are having our usual dinner date, except tonight, he’s going to meet my mom and my sister, Jenny.
“Let’s see, ‘You will have a change in your love life.’ interesting.” Brian grinned.
“What kind of change?” I asked, laughing at the message.
“Open yours or I’ll open it for you!” Brian tries to steal the cookie from me.
“Can’t do that! I have to open it.” I open the cookie.
‘Hold on to the one you love, for they might leave
you.’
“What...” I gasped in shock, it’s corresponding to Brian’s!
“So? What does it say?” Brian asked as he takes a sip of his water.
“Something that makes no sense. Let’s go.” I drop the paper slip in my glass as I stand up and head out the door.
“Wait up!” Brian hurries out the restaurant to catch up with me.
“You okay?” Brian asked, worries appear in his baby blue eyes as he unlocks the car.
“Yeah, I’m just nervous about you meeting my family and that fortune cookie just creep me out!” I complained as I climb in the passenger seat.
“I didn’t know my little angel was superstitious.” Brian grinned as he starts the car.
“I’m not! But today’s special!”
“I know, trust me, everything will be fine!” He kisses me gently on the cheek, as we speed off into the beautiful sunset.
“Mom? I’m home! And I brought someone you really want to meet!” I yelled at the top of my lungs while searching the whole house.
“Need a hand?” Brian asked, taking off his shoes and put them neatly on the side of the stairs.
“Yeah, go look in the kitchen for me.” I smiled, wondering where my mom could be. She wants to meet Brian ever since the first time I mentioned him.
“You bellowed?” my mom came down the stairs.
“Wow! Mom! You look great! You’re not trying to steal him away, are you?” I joked; the best part of my family is that I have a humorous mom who will always brighten up my day like Brian does.
“Brian? I found my mom!” I yelled while heading towards the kitchen. But Brian wasn’t there.
“Angela?” a voice shouted from the backyard.
“You need some help?” Brian asked though the screen door. He was surprise to sees a girl with long dark brown hair standing in the middle of the garden with a small shovel in her hand and covered in dirt.
“Who are you?” the girl screamed and throws the shovel at Brian.
“Whoa, calm down! I’m Brian, you know, your sister’s boyfriend? You must be Jenny.” Brian opens the screen door and stepped out.
“You are? You’re different than what I imagined. I’m Jenny.” Jenny holds out her hand.
“Nice to meet you.” Brian gave her one of his warm, friendly smile.
“Listen, I’m sorry about...”
“It’s okay, don’t worry about it.” Brian shrugged and that’s when Jenny feels a strange attraction towards Brian, her sister’s boyfriend. Little did she know, Brian was amazed at her shy, sweet tone of voice and her big, dark brown eyes. Brian has an urge of taking her into his arms and never let go, but his conscious stopped him.
“You okay?” Jenny asked, Brian’s biting his bottom lip unconsciously.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” Brian replied, tasting the salty sweet blood in his mouth, he realizes that it’s going to be hard to be around Jenny.
“You sure? You’re bleeding.” Jenny reaches over to wipe the blood off Brian’s chin.
“No, I’m fine. Really!” Brian takes a few steps back, kicking over the flowerpot.
“I’m so sorry. I’ll pay for that if you want me to, of course you want me to, I’m such a klutz, I keep mess things up.” It just blurs out Brian’s mouth; he just can’t get rid of that nervous feeling that he has around Jenny!
“Careful!” Jenny screamed as Brian trips over the broken pieces.
“Whoa!” Brian fell backward and landed hard on his back.
“Need a hand?” Jenny pulled on Brian’s wrist, trying to pull him up, but losing her balance also, she landed right on Brian!
“Owww! I think I’m a pancake now!” Brian complained, making a face.
“And that’s how you show your appreciation?” Jenny smiles at him, struggling to get up.
“Wrestling?” I grinned as Brian jumps up and tries to tackle me.
“What did you say?” Brian asked while tickling me on my sides.
“Nothing! Nothing! Nothing at all!” I yelled between laughs.
“Help me Jenny!” I laughed. But Jenny wasn’t there; Brian stopped what
he was doing as he glance around the room.
“Where is she?” I looked around me, wondering where could she be.
“I have no clue.” Brian helps me on my feet. Sitting in her room, Jenny couldn’t get the image of Brian out her head, the tenderness in his eyes, the sweetness in his voice, and the truthfulness on his face seems like he’s a guy you can depend on, no matter what happens.
“What’s wrong with me?” Jenny asked herself, a feeling of jealousy float into her mind, jealous of her own sister, jealous of her boyfriend, jealous of... her thought were cut off by the gently knocks on the door.
“May I come in?” I wait till Jenny slowly nodded then sit down next to her on her bed.
“So?”
“So what?” Jenny replied, sounding annoyed.
“Brian? What do you think?” I look at her, concerned, she’s always so sweet, what have gotten into her today?
Jenny lets out a heavy before she answers her sister’s question.
“He seems nice, great personality, you two make a nice couple!” Jenny bit her lips as she feels that jealous feeling again, she can’t stand seeing her sister so happy, she knows it’s not right, but she can’t help it.
“You okay? You look pale.” I move a little closer, feeling her forehead to see if she has a cold or not.
“Leave me alone!” Jenny slapped off my hand and exits the room furiously...
I sit on the bed, shocked at the way she reacts, even though I’m only a year younger to her, but we’re almost like twins, I usually know what she’s thinking! Now she seems like a completely stranger to me.
“Everything okay up here?” Brian enters the room and sits down next to me.
“Yeah, something’s bothering Jenny though, she’s acting rather weird.” I sighed, rubbing my head with my hands.
“You okay?”
“Yeah, just a headache. Can you check on Jenny for me?”
“Sure, why not, after all, she’s like family!” Brian grinned and leaves the room, leaving me sitting there, with my head in hands.
“I knew I’d find you here.” Brian smiles as he sees Jenny sitting on the front porch.
“Hey.”
“Hey, so, what’s going on?” Brian asked.
“Nothing, just a little tired, you know?” Jenny replied, knowing that it’s a lie, but she can’t just come out and told Brian that she has feelings for him, she can’t!
“You sure? Something’s troubling you.” Brian gave her a supportive pat on the shoulder.
“Yeah, listen, I have to talk to you, it’s about...it’s about you.” Jenny manages to say.
“What? Did I do something wrong?” Brian’s getting all tensed up at Jenny’s words.
“No, it’s just...never mind. Let’s go in, it’s getting chilly out here.” Jenny stands up, rubbing her hands up and down her arms.
“Wait, you can tell me, I’m here for you.” Brian holds her back.
“You can help me? How? So are you a saint?” Jenny snapped it’s the only way she knows to hide her feelings for Brian, even though she doesn’t want it to be that way.
“No, I’m trying to help you, if there’s something troubling you, you can feel free to tell me!” Brian’s getting impatient, surprising at himself being aggressive with a girl; Brian loosens his grip on her arm.
“I’m sorry, did I hurt you?”
“Don’t be so sweet, you’re making it harder for me...”
Tears are rolling down Jenny’s face, she can’t hold them back any longer, the more time she spends with Brian, the more she wants to tell him her feelings.
“I’m sorry...” a wave of emotions came over Brian; regrets, love, shame, and even betrayal. Brian pulls Jenny into his arms, kissing the tears off her cheek, slowly trails down to her lips.
“Brian...” Jenny whispered, Brian’s lips capture hers before another word comes out her mouth.
“Brian? Is everything okay? I heard...” my mind went blank as I saw the couple kissing on the porch, my boyfriend and my sister.
“I wish I was blind!” I screamed in sorrow, heartache, anger, and disbelief of the fact that my boyfriend is cheating on me with my sister!
“Angela, I...it was an accident...I...” Jenny and Brian pull away from each other as they stammered out.
“What kind of accident? He tripped and falls on your lips?” I asked coldly, sounding as if I’m watching a soap opera, whatever happens doesn’t concern me at all.
"No...I...” Jenny opens her mouth, trying to explain.
“Brian, I think you should go, and Jenny, sweetie, can I talk to you?” I turned and walk back to the house, letting them know that it wasn’t a request, it was an order or a warning even.
“I guess I should go.” Brian finally said after staring at the door for a few seconds, he can’t believe I just took off like that. It also made him worry of what’s going to happen to Jenny.
“I’ll be okay, bye.” Without looking back, Jenny returns to the house.
Brian lets out a heavy sigh of depress and frustration as he starts his car and speeds off.
“May I come in?” Jenny knocked on my door gently.
“Yeah.” I replied, putting down a picture of Brian and me on the nightstand.
“I’m sorry! It was an...” Remembering what I said last time when she mentions the word ‘accident’, Jenny closes her mouth unconsciously.
“Sit down, Jen, I need to talk to you...” I patted the mattress, waiting for Jenny to sit down...
“I’m sorry! I promise it will never happen again!” Jenny finally burst out after a long while of silence that almost drives her crazy.
“It’s okay.” I sighed; Jenny stares at me in disbelief.
“How can she be so calm?” she wonders.
“I guess it’s over between me and Brian. Maybe you’re the ‘new change’ in Brian’s life.” I chuckled sourly; somehow in my heart, I’m glad that it’s over, I do care about Brian, but it seems like there’s always something missing when I’m with him. The only reason I’m hurt is because my pride is hurt; it’s hurt by the fact that Brian went for my little sister, not because of the fact that Brian doesn’t have any feelings for me!
“ANGELA! Please, yell at me, scream at me, and hit me for all I care. Don’t just sit there like it’s nothing concern you!” Jenny jumped up and starts to pace around the room.
“I’m not upset, hurt maybe, but never upset. You’re my sister, the only sister I ever have; I could never hate you or get upset with you.” I said, but although in my heart I know that I meant what I said, but my tone sounds different, my voice sound sarcastic and hateful.
“Angel? What happened to you? Why are you behaving like this?” Jenny stumbles backwards to the door.
“Why? I’ll tell you why, because my sister just decide to kiss my boyfriend out of the blue!” I stare at her like a wild animal looking at its prey.
“I’m sorry!” Jenny burst into tears as she runs out my room.
“I’m sorry...” I whispered to the tightly shut door.
“Jenny’s hurt; and out of all people, I’m the one that had hurt her.” a tiny voice in my head tells me.
“She hurt me first!” I said out loud.
“SHE HURT ME FIRST!” I screamed out the open window, don’t care if the whole wide world heard me or not.
“She hurt me first...” I sobbed as I pull the blanket over me; wishing
it was only a terrible dream and by the time I
wake up, everything
will be just like the way it was.
*~* Next Day

“Mom! Where’s my breakfast?” I said while pulling a long sleeves top over my head.
“Hi...Brian. Didn’t expect to see you here.” I choked out as Brian stands up and walks towards me.
”Hi... can I have a word with you? Well, maybe more than a word.” Brian manages to squeeze out a smile.
“Sure... Do you want anything? Juice? Waffles? Toasts?”
“No, I’m fine, thank you.” Brian replied. Soon, the room is filled with nervousness and awkward.
“So... are you here to see Jenny?” I finally asked as I take a sip of my coffee; I never had black coffee in my life, but now it doesn’t taste so bitter.
“No, I was wondering if I can have a talk with you?”
“About what?”
“About what happened... I’m truly sorry, but I don’t think that we should go on like this... I know that we can pretend that it never happened, but it did and there’s nothing you or me can do to change that. I think you should tell Jenny...”
“No, you should.” I smiled.
“What?”
“I mean, if it’s over between us, then I think it’s totally okay for you to tell her that. I thought about this whole thing over last night; I realized that we were more like best friends than a couple, and I know that Jenny is the one for you.” I walked closer to Brian, who’s still in shock.
“But...”
“Are we still friends?” I hold out my hand.
“Yeah, always.” a relieved smile appeared on his face as he shook my hand.
“Thank you.” Brian whispered as he gives me a hug.
“What for? You’re my best friend” I laughed as I hugged back.
“What’s going on here?” We turned at the sound of Jenny’s voice.
“You two are back together? That’s great! That’s really great!” Jenny screamed, before I can explain, Jenny pushes me aside and steps right up to Brian.
“Did you have fun playing with my feelings?” Jenny confronted Brian.
“I didn’t...” Brian started, but Jenny cuts him off.
“You didn’t have any feelings for me? I don’t know who you are anymore, in fact, I don’t know who you both are anymore...” Jenny ran out the room as she lets out a heartbroken cry...
“Why are you still here? Go find her!” I screamed; my voice sound sharp
and impatient. Brian bolted out the door immediately.
“Where can she be?” Brian asked himself as he drives around the neighborhood, suddenly, the sight of Jenny comes into his view, she’s siting on the swing in the park nearby. Slamming on the brake, Brian jumps out the car and run as fast as he could to the girl of his dreams.
“What are you doing here?” Jenny said coldly.
“I’m here because I want to be with you.” Brian sighed and sits down to the swing next to her.
“Why don’t you save your lies for someone else?” Jenny said through gritted teeth, trying to control her pain and emotions.
“I love you! And no matter what you say or do, it’s never going to change!”
“Funny, I thought you loved Angela.” Jenny replied sarcastically.
“I did, and I will, she’s a good friend, we cleared things up this morning, and that hug meant friendship, nothing more.” Brian explained.
“Why should I believe you?”
“You don’t have to, but please.” Jenny looks deep into Brian’s eyes, trying to decide whether she should forgive him or not. She saw honesty, caring, and truth in Brian’s eyes.
“I’m sorry...I can’t stand seeing you or Angela after what happened. I care about you, I did what I did because I... I love you.” Jenny sobbed.
“I do too... Don’t be sorry, we’re here, together.” Brian smiled while tucking Jenny’s brown hair behind her ear and kisses the tears on her face as he takes her hand into his and walked back to the house, side by side...
