This is one of the funniest movies ever made. For those of you who don't know, this is a true story. It is an actual trip (no pun intended) taken by Hunter S. Thompson with his lawyer, on which they refused to take any guff from the swine in this completely Republican city.
The total irony of this movie soars over the heads of most of the people who didn't live during this time and know what Vegas stood for. In the '70s, the word "Vegas" had a completely different connotation than what it means today; upon hearing this word people thought of right wing politicians and performers like Frank Sinatra, not...well, everything else it stands for today.
What makes this movie so funny is the idea of two men heading straight for the heart of the "proper" (i.e. square) U.S. of A. and being the total opposite of what the city stood for and loving every minute of it.
Although the movie does have some sort of a moral, it lacks a true plot other than roaming around Las Vegas zonked out of yer gord. (The book, however, lends itself a very reflective take on Dr. Gonzo's experiences.) But the movie is good for a laugh.
