TECH COMPLETES SWEEP OF GARDNER-WEBB 6-2

ATLANTA - Jason Perry, Victor Menocal and Eric Patterson each had two hits and Chris Goodman worked seven strong innings to lead 12th-ranked Georgia Tech (18-3) to a 6-2 win over visiting Gardner-Webb (13-11) on Sunday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium. The win, which completed the Yellow Jackets' two-game sweep of the Bulldogs, improved Tech's record to 13-0 at its new home park and extended its home winning streak to 18 games overall dating back to last season.

Goodman (2-0), a converted shortstop, earned the win in his first career start. The right-hander held the Bulldogs to two runs on seven hits in seven innings, while striking out four batters and not issuing a walk. Aaron Walker and Menocal each worked a scoreless inning in relief to preserve the victory.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Matthew Boggs was hit by a pitch to start the game, while a single from Menocal put runners on first and second bases. Boggs and Menocal both scored after Tyler Parker reached on an infield single and Gardner-Webb pitcher Joey Siak threw the ball away down the right field line. An RBI groundout from Matt Murton plated Parker with the final run of the inning.

Tech pushed the lead to 5-0 in the sixth when Perry singled and scored on an RBI single from Patterson, and Wes Rynders walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

The Bulldogs cut the lead to 5-2 in the top of the seventh with a two-run homer from Jim Glueckert, who went 3-for-4 in the game. The home run was his third of the season.

Tech answered in the bottom of the seventh after Menocal singled, took second base on a balk, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Jeremy Slayden.

Siak (3-3) took the loss despite a solid effort, allowing five runs on seven hits in six innings of work. He settled down to hold the Yellow Jackets to just four hits after the first inning.

Tech will return to action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. when the Yellow Jackets take on Georgia at Foley Field in Athens.
