OWINGS LEADS GEORGIA TECH TO 25-3 WIN OVER GEORGIA STATE

ATLANTA - Micah Owings hit a grand slam and drove in five runs while Clifton Remole went 3-for-5 with a career-high six RBI to lead Georgia Tech (18-13) to a 25-3 win over Georgia State (13-18) on Tuesday evening at DeKalb South Field.

Tech's 25 runs were the most since a 27-4 win over Virginia on March 7, 1998. The Yellow Jackets' 22 hits were a season-high.

Owings with 2-for-4 with five RBI and four runs scored, and Mike Nickeas added three RBI. Wes Hodges went 2-for-3 with four runs scored, while Andy Hawranick added three hits extra base hits with a double, triple and home run.

Tech's Aaron Walker (1-0) earned the win after tossing a scoreless inning in relief. The Yellow Jackets' bullpen of Walker, Jared Hyatt, Tim Gustafson, Jason Neighborgall, Ryan Self and Jordan Crews combined to work six scoreless innings in relief of starter Ryan Turner.

Georgia Tech scored four funs in the first inning with only one hit after drawing five walks. Two Georgia State errors aided an inning that also included an RBI single by Remole and a sacrifice fly from Nickeas. A pair of RBI groundouts from Charlie Pelt and Brian Williams pulled the Panthers to within 4-2 in the bottom of the inning, but a three-run double by Remole staked Tech to a 7-2 lead in the second.

The Yellow Jackets added five more runs in the third inning, highlighted by two-run homers from both Hawranick, his second of the year, and Nickeas, his fourth. Georgia State's Tim Burgess walked in the bottom of the third inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Rusty Bennett to make the score 12-3.

Tyler Greene hit a solo home run, his fifth of the season, and Eric Patterson added an RBI double in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 14-3.

A grand slam from Owings, his team-leading 11th home run of the year, extended the Tech lead to 18-3 in the sixth inning. The Yellow Jackets added three more runs in the seventh, including a two-run single from Remole and an RBI double from Whit Robbins, to make the score 21-3.

Cameron Lane had an RBI single and Ryan Stanley earned a bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning to extend the lead to 23-3. An RBI triple from Hawranick and an RBI single from Jeff Kindel in the ninth inning provided the final 25-3 margin.

Georgia State starter Ben Rulon (1-6), one of eight pitchers in the game, took the loss after allowing four runs in one-third of an inning.

Georgia Tech hosts North Carolina in a three-game ACC series this weekend at Russ Chandler Stadium. First pitch on Friday and Saturday will be at 7 p.m. and both games will be televised on Fox Sports Net South. Sunday's series finale will begin at 1 p.m.
