Tech starter Lee Hyde (4-2) earned the win, working four innings and allowing one run in a designated staff day. The freshman allowed three hits and issued one walk while striking out four. The Yellow Jackets used five pitchers in the game, and Jordan Crews, Ryan Self and Jared Hyatt each worked scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
The Yellow Jackets had 18 hits in the game, including three hits each from Owings, Brandon Boggs, who went 3-for-3, and Andy Hawranick. Clifton Remole was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and two RBI.
Tech exploded for four runs, including three home runs, in the first inning off Georgia State starter Tim Burgess (0-4). Eric Patterson led off the inning with a solo home run, his seventh of the year, Owings hit a two-run homer, his team-leading 14th, and Boggs followed with a solo shot, his eighth.
The Yellow Jackets added five runs in the second inning to make the score 9-0. Tech sent 10 batters to the plate and had five hits in the inning, including RBI singles from Owings, Blackwood, Hawranick and Mike Trapani.
In the third, Boggs singled and scored on a wild pitch and Remole added an RBI double as Tech extended the lead to 11-0.
The Panthers scored three runs in the middle innings on three solo home runs from Rusty Bennett, his ninth of the year, Justin Newman, his third, and Ryan Sterling, his fourth. The Yellow Jackets added runs in the fifth and sixth on an RBI single from Remole and an RBI groundout from Cameron Lane to make the score 13-3.
Burgess, one of four Georgia State pitchers in the game, took the loss after allowing nine runs in 1 1/3 innings. Newman led the Panthers' offense with a 3-for-5 performance, and Burgess added two hits as the designated hitter.
Tech senior pitchers Philip Perry and Brian Burks each grounded out in pinch hitting appearances in the eighth inning, the first at bats of their collegiate careers.
Tech completed its in-state schedule with an 8-2 record against teams from Georgia, and the Yellow Jackets are 100-30 against in-state opponents in 11 years under head coach Danny Hall.
Georgia Tech closes out the regular season this weekend with a three-game series against Maryland at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Md. The Yellow Jackets are currently tied with Virginia for first place in the ACC standings, and Tech can clinch the regular season championship with an unbeaten weekend against the Terrapins.
