Jackets Capture NCAA Atlanta Regional Crown with 5-3 Win Over Texas Tech

ATLANTA - Andrew Kown worked seven strong innings while Brandon Boggs and Tyler Greene belted solo home runs as top-seeded Georgia Tech defeated second-seeded Texas Tech 5-3, in the NCAA Atlanta Regional Championship game on Sunday afternoon in Russ Chandler Stadium. The Jackets (44-19) will host Georgia in an NCAA Super Regional next weekend. The NCAA will announce the game times and dates tonight at 11 p.m. on ESPN. It will be the third Super Regional that the Jackets have hosted (2000, '02 & '04), winning in 2002 to advance to their second College World Series. Texas Tech ends the season with a 40-21 record.

"I'm very proud of my team," said Georgia Tech head coach Danny Hall. "I think we did a lot of the little things pretty well, not only today, but the whole tournament. Andrew Kown did a great job pitching out of trouble and battled late into the game and gave us everything he had. Certainly we got some key hits, and we made some great defensive plays. Mike Trapani's defensive play late was a key one, and then Andy Hawranick throwing Josh Brady out in the ninth inning was a key defensive play. I'm very happy and proud of this team, and we're certainly looking forward to a chance to play again next weekend here at home." Kown (10-1) allowed one earned run, struck out seven and walked just three to win his ninth straight decision. Reliever Jordan Crews worked the final two innings, giving up three hits, two earned runs and two walks.

"Early on I was feeling good about my breaking ball," said Kown. "I think that helped me out late in the game especially because I was able to get that over on 0-0 pitches and keep them off-balance. Later in the game, my fastball got up in the count and I went back to my breaker. Just keeping the fastball down in the zone was huge for me today, and not throwing the same pitch twice kept them off balance."

Meanwhile, Greene finished 3-for-5, with the home run and two RBI to lead the Yellow Jackets offensively. Boggs, Clifton Remole and Micah Owings drove in the other runs for the Jackets.

Starting pitcher Michael McGowan took the the loss for the Red Raiders, throwing 3 1/3 innings, allowing three hits, three earned runs and fanned three. Michael Mask led the Texas Tech bats, going 3-for-4, with a home run and two runs batted in. Josh Brady chipped in with a 3-for-5 effort for the Red Raiders.

Georgia Tech's Eric Patterson was named as the Atlanta Regional most outstanding player. Owings, Remole, Greene, Kown and Whit Robbins were all selected to the NCAA Atlanta Regional All-Tournament team, along with Patterson.
