Poutier (3-1) started and worked five innings, holding the Yellow Jackets to one run on four hits to earn the victory. Doolittle worked three shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out two. Lambert recorded his 10th save of the season by pitching a scoreless ninth inning and getting a game-ending double play.
Virginia’s pitchers held Georgia Tech to a total of five runs in the three-game series. The Cavaliers swept a three-game series from the Yellow Jackets for the second straight year.
Tech starter Blake Wood (7-1) lost for the first time in 2005 despite a strong effort. The right-hander went 7.2 innings and only allowed two runs on seven hits, but fell victim to a lack of run support.
The Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on doubles from Brandon Guyer and Scott Headd.
Tech tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning when a walk to Andy Hawranick and a single from Mike Trapani put runners on first and third bases, and Danny Payne followed with an RBI groundout. Virginia answered and took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning when Headd singled, took second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a bloop single from Kyle Werman.
The Yellow Jackets had other scoring opportunities, putting runners on base in eight of nine innings. But Tech hit into inning ending double plays in the fourth, sixth and ninth innings, and left seven runners on base.
Georgia Tech returns to action on Tuesday when the Yellow Jackets face Georgia at Turner Field. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
