Georgia State topples Tech 9-5

ATLANTA-Jean-Michel Rochon-Salvas had three hits and scored two runs to lead Georgia State (3-4) to a 9-5 victory over Georgia Tech (3-4) Wednesday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium.

The junior second baseman went 3-for-4 while Chase Childers paced the Panthers with a home run and three RBI as the Panthers won just their third game at Russ Chandler Stadium and seventh in the history of the series.

Center fielder Danny Payne and right fielder Wally Crancer led the Yellow Jackets with two hits each while shortstop Michael Fisher had a team-high two RBI in the game.

Adam Bowling (1-0) earned the win for Georgia State, allowing no runs on just two hits while striking out three in five innings of work. Panthers starter Jeramy Compton went four innings, allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out three.

A solo home run by Chase Childers, his first of the season, gave the Panthers a 1-0 edge in the top of the first, but the Yellow Jackets responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame to take the 4-1 lead. Danny Payne led off with a walk and moved to second on a single by Patrick Long before a one-out RBI double by Wally Crancer tied the game at 1-1. Long scored on a sacrifice fly by Luke Murton before a two-run home run by Michael Fisher, his first of the year, capped the Jackets’ scoring in the inning.

Georgia State tacked on five runs in the second to recapture the lead, 6-4. The Panthers collected five hits and a sacrifice fly while Tech starter Zach Von Tersch (0-1) walked one, hit a batter, and had three wild pitches in the frame.

The Yellow Jacket freshman gave up a total of six runs on six hits while striking out two in the first appearance of his collegiate career.

After Georgia State added a pair of runs in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Aeden McQueary and an RBI single by Luke Gordon, the Jackets scored one in the bottom of the frame, pulling Tech to within three runs at 8-5. Curtis Dupart walked to lead off the frame, moved up a base on a wild pitch, and then came around to score from second on a deep sacrifice fly by Jeff Ussery.

An RBI single by McQueary in the sixth inning plated Rochon-Salvas to push the score to 9-5.

The Yellow Jackets return to action this weekend when they host Duquesne in a three-game series beginning Friday at 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday’s games will begin at 1 p.m. The first two games will be featured on ACC Select, the online video streaming service of the Atlantic Coast Conference, with Richard Musterer and Steven Blackwood calling the action.
