Focus on education! Good start. But the emphasis of this posting was on teaching firefighting rather than sound fundamentals for the youth:

Focus on the educational system. Perhaps, we can start with the educational system - and educate our young to see that Filipinos know how to stand up, that Filipinos can face an army in full-battle gear with songs and prayers, that Filipinos know how to say 'enough' when it is enough, that Filipinos can command a president: "RESIGN or else... we will - FORCIBLY - pull you down, if we need to". Today, is a part of tomorrow's history that you and your like would have to learn to teach the Filipinos - young and old.

This one said it the way it is:

Subject: an educator's angst

I am a teacher (the non-traditional kind) and I am quite aghast to see the support erap gets from the masa. The masa's support on Erap is an indictment on our educational system. For decades, we have failed miserably in educating our children how to think critically. For instance, our textbooks require our students to memorize the names of Filipino heroes and presidents but we don't allow them to examine both their strengths and weaknesses. Kids learn so much trivia in school but they are not equipped with tools for analysis. I feel that educational leaders are not adequate to address this shortcoming. They themselves lack the intelligence to see what's wrong with those luxury cars.

I think when everything is resolved (when erap is gone etc etc) we should really confront the issue of awakening the consciousness of our poor kababayan. maybe parents should be more involved in educating their kids, their helpers, neighbors, relatives etc. employers can train their workers to think critically. priests and religious leaders should help their flock integrate the principles of righteousness and justice to their political opinion and daily walk. it is really a shame that we are called the largest christian nation in asia when our people cannot even distinguish what's right from wrong.

Sadly, this discussion thread was brushed aside again with one respondent saying that we should not be wasting our time with such concepts.

Predictably there was much nostalgia about 1986. Back patting at its finest! We just can't get enough of People Power and our claim as its contributor to humanity:

Enrico,
For me, Rizal has a wisdom that applies more on the 20th century than during his time, This century, we have seen Arm struggle becoming extinct worldwide, and replaced by People Power which was inspired by us Filipinos. Latest People power was Yugoslavia and Ivory Coast, Africa. And another People Power in progress here in RP. Let's double up the pressure.

You sound like Shamod, as in ..... Anyway, the Philippines doesn't need your investment and money. What do you think of the PHILIPPPINES, poor! Wake up, Mr. Donald Duck, we are very, very, very, very rich! If you have NOT stolen our riches, through your illegal business, we would never be what we are now. But don't you worry, we Filipinos can stand in our feet. Just you wait. And see. When that time comes, YOU ARE NOT WELCOME ANYMORE TO OUR COUNTRY. GOODBYE, SAYONARA, MASALAM, ADIOS, HINDI MABUHAY, KUNDI MAMATAY KA NA! (Mon Nov 6, 2000 1:50am)

It's no coincidence that one of the most interesting and emotionally-charged discussion threads on the forum is named "Re: to you defensive filipinos"!
