WHAT YOU NEED
Open new image 400 x 400 Transparent background
72 dpi.
Choose two colors for your dog. I used Foreground Color 8A6E53
Background Color 9C825E.
Choose your preshapes icon and select the eclipse in the tools
options menu. Set it up like this:
Retain style UNchecked, Antialias and Create as vector Both
Checked, Line width 10.
Now go to Line style Custom and set it up like this.
Be sure to SAVE AS NEW and give it a new name because we want to use it again later.
NOTE: Remember to not go to big on your work, or you'll end up having to resize your canvas because KPT 5 FiberOptix adds a lot to size when applied. Also, when applying the KPT 5 to the ears, remember to move the ears to the middle of your canvas, apply the KPT 5, then move them back to position.
Ok! Lets get going!
Draw out your eclipse and then click on your OBJECT SELECTOR tool and then right click on your image and choose node edit. Grab the top node and pull it up slightly. Then take one of the side nodes and grab one of the arrow ends and pull out but then up slightly. Then take the other end of the arrow and pull down and out slightly rounding out the bottom. Then do the same on the other side. Then grab the bottom node arrow and pull straight out to the side but not a lot then do same for the other end of the arrow. The object is to come up with a shape similar to this.
If you can't get it right, then feel free to start with
my Be's Guard Dog Face Preshape that was included in the zip file
provided.
Then goto your Layer Palette and convert to raster.
Add a new layer. Click on your DRAW tool and set it up like this.
Be sure you are using
the same line style you made earlier.
Now draw your ear shape. It can be long or short it's your dog!
Don't worry about the second ear yet. We'll get to that in a little bit further into this tutorial. But I did mine separately.
Now move the head layer to the top.
Add a new layer.
Using the DRAW tool again with the same settings, draw a circle like you see here.
What's the purpose of this you ask? You'll see soon
enough....LOL!
Now use your DEFORMATION tool and resize it a bit,
Click on this layer in your layer palette, then right click on it and choose duplicate. Now shut the duplicate layer off and go back to layer 4. Go to Selections/Select All then float the selection. Go to Eye Candy Fur and use my settings. NOTE: This will give the look after all is done a more mottled look to the fur rather than one color. Change the color in my settings if you want, just remember what color you used. So you can use it through out this tutorial. Keep it selected and change your foreground color to black and using your AIR BRUSH with these settings.
And start filling in like you see here but be careful
not to go all the way to the edge. Now you see his mouth
beginning to take shape. If you do go to far to the top don't
worry, it will be covered. But be careful on the sides and bottom
for this is his bottom jaw line. And the black is the inside of
his mouth.
While still selected, choose your RETOUCH tool and use these settings.
Then go around the edges like you see here as this softens or blends the pixels and gives much better fur results in the end. NOTE: Remember this tip because it gives a much better fur results when just using the Eye Candy Fur filter as well.
Deselect.
Now use your
LASSO tool and just select this area you see here and make it
float.
Go into Effects/KPT5/FiberOptix now and use my preset that looks like the shape of a U. Now, while still selected, you may want to go over just the top part of the selection with your RETOUCH tool same settings to smooth it a bit. DON'T mess with the bottom hairs.
Deselect.
Now turn the duplicate layer 4 back on and select it and
make it float. And use Eye Candy Fur same settings as before.
Turn OFF all layers except this one. Add a new layer.
Foreground color Black. Use your AIRBRUSH tool again using these settings. And draw somes lines like you see here. This produces darker areas as shadows of sort, or maybe a more crinkled or scrunched up nose as a dog baring his teeth........LOL
Then BLUR/Gaussian Blur at 5.77 setting. You may need to adjust these settings for your dog. Merge these two layers then select it and make it float. Go into Effects/KPT5/FiberOptix now and use my preset that looks sort of like a rectangle.
Deselect.
Now turn OFF all layers and select layer 2 or the HEAD layer. Make sure the image is selected then make it float. And use Eye Candy Fur same settings as before. Now Go into Effects/KPT5/FiberOptix and use my preset that looks sort of like a rectangle. Deselect.
Turn all layers OFF and turn ON the EAR layer. Make sure the image is selected then make it float. And then use Eye Candy Fur same settings as before.
DO NOT DESELECT! Go to SELECTIONS/MODIFY/CONTRACT 30. This will be his inner ear.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The contract 30 may need to be adjusted for the original width of the whole ear. Like my ear was wide so I contracted 30. Yours may be different. Choose a pink color for your foreground color. I used FFC0C0. Use your FLOOD FILL tool to fill the selection, then choose your RETOUCH tool to soften around the selection.
Deselect.
If it looks like it could use a more softer effect after you deselect, then just lightly go around again where the pink meets the brown or what ever color you used for the dog.
Now select the whole ear and make it float and Go into Effects/KPT5/FiberOptix using the same settings as before for the Head and Upper Nose area. Copy and paste as new layer. Mirror it and put in place where you want it. (NOTE: I did my ears separately).
Your guard dog should look similar to this now.
Now highlight the upper nose area. Add a new layer. And apply the nose tube. You may use the Color/Colorize feature if you need to change the color. Or you may use the brightness feature to darken it like I did for Baby Max and Maxine at the end of this tutorial. Position it somewhat in the middle. Change Your foreground and background color to white.
Choose your Preshapes
tool and with these settings,
Draw out an eclipse shape similar to this.
Convert to raster.
Change your foreground and background colors to black, and draw out a smaller eclipse like you see here.
Convert to raster. Add a new layer and
then add a white spot on the black for the highlight part using
your paint brush or airbrush tool just adjust the settings for
size as needed. Put it where you want. I made mine upside down
"L" shape size 2, but you can do a circle, an eclipse
or square instead. This is part of your dogs' personality so do
what you want here. Since the eyes are a big part of the dogs'
personality, play around with the three parts until you get a
look you like. Then the layer with the white highlight, you'll
need to go to Effects/Blur/Gaussian Blur and blur it. You will
need to play with the settings here because your highlight may be
different from mine. However my settings here are 3.75.
Turn off all layers EXCEPT the three eye layers. Now merge visible. Turn on all your layers, click back on your eye layer and choose your SELECTION tool and surround your eye and make it float, then go in to Eye Candy/Glass/Graphite use my Guard Dog Eye_BDT preset. Glass color is 800000 for mine but you can fool around and come up with neat effects here. Copy and paste as new layer. Move it into position where you want it. Now you can leave the eyes as they are or you can have a lot of fun here also. Remember, he's your dog and you can make him as cute and loveable or as mean and nasty as you want. You can put them close together, move them far apart, make him cross-eyed, move the eyes down closer to the nose or up higher. You can achieve a variety of different looks. Just have fun!
Now, how about eye lids? Yes we can do that easily. Highlight one of the eye layers. Using your SELECTION tool surround JUST THE TOP HALF OR TOP ONE THIRD of the eye and make it float. Now, click on the head layer, now copy, now click back on your eye layer again and then paste as new layer. Hope I made that clear. Click on the new layer in you layer palette. Using your selection tool surround the little piece of fur. Choose your RETOUCH tool and using the same settings for soften as before, go around the whole piece. Soften the whole eyelid. Make sure the selection is floated and go to Effects/KPT5/FiberOptix and using the same rectangle shape for the face. Now position the eyelid. You may need to resize a little. I had to resize mine 60%. Yours may be different.
Here's what he looks like now.
Now, how about eyelashes? Yep, draw them one by one if you want. But, try my way. Trust me, there is a fast way with natural looking results! Remember what we did with the bottom jaw area? Just selecting part of the sides and bottom? We will do that here except we will just select mostly the bottom portion of the eyelid using the LASSO tool. Don't make the selected area to big.
Something like you see here before I made the ants hug the selection.
Now make it
float so the ants hug the selection. Now defloat for a moment so
you can use the RETOUCH tool to soften the selected area. After
you soften the pixels, go to EFFECTS/Eye Candy/Fur and using the
same settings EXCEPT change the color to black or keep the brown
color. Ok, make it purple if you insist! And change the direction.
If things don't look right, just play with the settings and
direction to achieve the look you want. Sometimes depending on
the look I want, I just do it twice back to back. That seems to
do the trick. DESELECT, then just copy and paste as new layer and
mirror and move into position over the other eye.
After all this, here's my little guy.
He seems sad. Well, just one look and you know why! He has no smile, or no teeth to bare or to bite you, no tongue to taste you with....LOL So lets do something about that right now.
We will start with the tongue. You can draw out your own like I did, or use my selection. However, please note that it may be to small or big for your dog so just use the deformation tool to resize and such to fit after you fill it with color. To use the Selection, highlight the mouth layer and add a new layer then go to SELECTIONS/LOAD FROM DISK and click on guarddogtongue_BDT and change your foreground color to FFC0C0. And flood fill the selection.
Now change your foreground color to FF8080 and using your AIRBRUSH with these settings, and lightly spray all over the tongue evenly like you see here. This is to look like taste buds.
Now go to Effects/3D Effects/Inner Bevel and use my Guard Dog Tongue_BDT preset.
Add a new layer. Choose your draw tool and use the same foreground color, and draw a middle line like tongues have.
Like you see here.
Now go to EFFECTS/BLUR/GAUSSIAN BLUR and set it at around 2.00. Yes it will be subtle, but you can blur less if you want. Or use a different color for the line. That choice is up to you.
Turn off all layers except the tongue layers and merge visible.
Whew! Well, get a drink and lets continue on with his teeth. Here's the fun part. With the tongue layer highlighted, add a new layer. Save this image and set aside for now.
Open a new image 300 x 300 transparent background. Flood fill with a color OTHER THAN white or black. Add a new layer. Now using your SELECTIONS tool, rectangle shape, Antialias UNCHECKED, Draw out a rectangle and flood fill with white. Float the selection and go to EFFECTS/3D EFFECTS/CUTOUT/ Both offsets set at 0, Shadow Color black, the fill with color UNCHECKED, Opacity 100 and Blur 6.3
I made some teeth so you can see. Make some teeth pointy. Just use your deformation tool and hold the control button while moving in one of the bottom corners in. If your tooth is to short, just make it longer. Make a few teeth and play with the placement.
I did mine like this.
You can now copy and paste each tooth separately or do like I did and deleted the colored background then merged visible, then copy and pasted as a new layer above the tongue. Just use the deformation tool to adjust the teeth. And then sharpen. If you want your dog to have bottom teeth, copy and paste as new layer and flip the set of top teeth after merging them then use the deformation tool to make fit. You might have to trim a couple of teeth off the sides on the bottom.
Now you have one last time to adjust the eyes and teeth and nose, etc. NOTE: If you want to place a piece of cloth or toy, or what ever in his mouth, you need to that before merging the head. To make the cloth, click on the tongue layer and make a new layer, using your LASSO tool, draw out a jagged like form. Flood fill with a color or pattern of your choice. Then using your RETOUCH tool, smudge brush with these settings,
Pull out from the edges to make it look frayed. Something like this.
Position the cloth in his teeth. I find it looks better without the tongue for this look.
Here's how he looks with the tongue layer active.
Now, once your dog face has his unique look, merge visible and tube it or just save as a PSP file. Set it aside for now.
Now on to the legs and tail.
Open a NEW IMAGE. 400 X 400. Transparent background. Choose your PRESET SHAPES and choose my GuardDogLegs_BDT shape. And use the settings shown.
Convert to raster. Once again, select your image and make it float. Go in to Eye Candy/Fur and use the same Guard Dog_BDT preset. Or what ever you used before for this step before. Then while still selected, go in to Effects/KPT5/FiberOptix using the same settings as before for the head and upper nose area. (The rectangle). DESELECT and copy and paste as new layer. Arrange like this.
Now using the same main colors, choose your DRAW tool same settings as you used for the upper nose area, and draw your dog a tail. Convert to raster. Select the tail and make float. And go in to Eye Candy using the same settings as before for the legs. While still selected, go in to Effects/KPT5/FiberOptix using the same settings as before for the head and upper nose area. (The rectangle). Now add a new layer and go to your head image and resize it then copy and paste as new layer above the legs layer or use the tube of it and adjust the size and apply as new layer. Move things around like you want them using your MOVE tool. When your dog is like you want him, merge visible and save and tube him or her.
Congratulations! You did it!
