PROTEST AGAINST FURTHER

DEVELOPMENT & EXPANSION OF

LEICHHARDT BUS DEPOT

Once again the spectre of irresponsible urban development has raised its ugly head with the submission last year by State Transit to Leichhardt Council to further develop and ultimately expand the Leichhardt Bus Depot.

The Development Application (D/2001/376) describes the construction of a new access road from Leichhardt bus depot to Balmain Road. It is proposed that the new bus depot entrance/exit will be constructed directly opposite Charlotte Street.

The future expansion of the bus depot is also mentioned - this Development Application is described as "Stage 1 of a longer term proposal to expand the bus depot on State Transit owned land down to the Balmain Road frontage".

As with the local residents' - and Leichhardt Council's - vigorous opposition to the depot expansion in 2000 and 2001, we hope you will again support a protest opposed to any further development of the existing bus depot and encourage authorities to consider alternative solutions that would have minimal impact on residents and a greater emphasis on a return and conservation of the natural environment.

GOVERNMENT MINISTERS IN THE FIRING LINE - ELECTION MARCH 2003

As such, a campaign has been launched directly targeting the State Government and Ministers responsible for the application and subsequent development. A public message needs to be sent to the government, indicating the public disgust at the continuation of the proposal.

Would you please be kind enough to read the attached Protest Letter and should you oppose the development, print, sign and forward the letter directly to local Councillors and Government Ministers. Public consultation closed on August 15, 2001, so significant lobbying by the public is now required.

This proposal has already been vigourously objected to and the residents believe that if the expansion is ultimately successful there will be long term detrimental effects on the quality of life and land values in the vicinity of the expanded depot.

We seek your ongoing support in opposing this imposed development, or at least making the development conform with town planning considerations with respect to noise, visual impact, landscaping and social impacts.

Officials and politicians must be clear on the community's opposition to this proposal. The State Election is due on Saturday 22 March 2003.. Our local member for Port Jackson; the Minister for the Department of Urban Affairs and Planning; the Minister for the Environment; the Minister for Transport and the Premier must be left in no doubt as to the risk they face at the upcoming election should the public's insistence on an acceptable solution not be realised.
