Mom's Carnegie Hall. After all these years, we were finally visiting Carnegie Hall. Judy Garland had recorded her grammy award -winning concert album here. Obviously hallowed ground. But we were there to see a concert by Jose Carreras. We had gone to New York with my friend Barb, who is a huge Carreras fan. I bought the magnet in the gift shop, which displayed photos of Garland's concert. It was very exciting. Unfortunately, the magnet now makes me very sad. We were there on May 17, 1996. On May 18, 1996, while visiting a friend, we received the phone call that David had been in an auto accident, was in the hospital, and not expected to live. He died before we got back home again. So this magnet reminds me of David's death, more than of Carreras' concert...or even the Garland concert. Are You Being Served? Calling all Nit-Pickers You go, Bill... WHAT I'M READING For anyone contemplating reading this book, I strongly recommend that you check out this web page. About the time you get to page 13 of Night Listener, the reason wny will make sense to you. That's it for today!

ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER... 13 January 2001 What a glorious day! It will come as no surprise to anybody who reads the newspaper or watches TV, but California has been inundated with storms for the last couple of days. Pictures of 30' high waves flood across our television screens nightly. There was that story of the tourists who got trapped on Alcatraz the other day. There are high winds. Doppler radar shows dark green everywhere. Somehow in the midst of all of this, Davis seems to have been a little island of calm. Well, it rained here. And we had wind. But I have been through "storms" here and this certainly didn't qualify. Today the state is enjoying sunshine. The threatened cloud has passed away and we are in for a couple of days of sunny skies before the rains return next week. I took off this morning for Sacramento. I was driving Priscilla to the clinic. The drive in to Sacramento was amazing. The skies were crystal clear. Not a hint of pollution. The buildings of the capitol positively sparkled in the sun's rays. There were fluffy clouds hanging over the Sierras and if you looked closely, you could see where the clouds ended and the snow began. The Yolo Causeway had large pools of standing water, where egrets congregated and other birds flew about in lazy circles. Even Priscilla's neighborhood sparkled. It's hard to think about the drug dealing and the violent episodes when everything is clean and freshly washed. Priscilla is in a lot of pain and the word is that she "isn't doing very well." I noticed she's moving much more slowly and she said she told the doctor she wanted to "trade in this butt for a new one." But she remains cheerful, worried about the grandkids (who have gone back to Los Angeles to go to school), and ready for the doctor to "fix her again." A new biopsy is scheduled for next week. After her appointment, I said goodbye to her and drove to the Arden Fair Mall, where I was meeting a friend for lunch. I was an hour early, so I sat in the car to read The Night Listener. Great book. I highly recommend it. At 11:30, I got out of the car and went to wait for my friend. "You're glowing," she told me. I always feel like I'm glowing when the clouds have been washed away and things look clean and clear again. It makes me feel alive inside. We had a great lunch, taking 3 hours to get caught up on all the news. We had such a good time, we're going to do it again next Friday, when she will bring along my official "fan" (hi, Carol!) Back home over the Causeway, looking at the clouds hanging on the Vaca Mountains to the west, and the snow in the Sutter Buttes. It was a great day to be alive. What's more, I came home to a message from a friend that we were invited to dinner. So we've just come from a lovely evening of home made soup, fresh bread, and good conversation. We've walked home through all the downed branches from the wind the other day, and I'm ready to call it a night. It might not be a great journal entry, but it's just what happened today. I was going to end this with a great picture of Steve, who has just returned from a cruise and took some fantastic pix. But then I realized I'd steal his thunder and I whould let him put it on his own diary page first. So I'll end with a picture of Lynn, whom we kind of abandoned here at home this evening. She's a big Cheez-It fan.
