Many perils come from talking too much:

You should keep silent, or at least speak moderately and be discreet, in order to protect and conceal your husband's secrets...Many perils come from talking too much, especially when one speaks with people who are arrogant or high-spirited...There is a country proverb that says, "Anyone who cannot control himself is not worthy of having mastery or authority over others."

WHAT I WATCHED...

WHEEL of FORTUNE
why?????

That's it for today!

AS THE WHEEL TURNS

7 March 2001

"Who in the world thought Vanna White should wear an orange dress and stand in front of a red car?" I asked.

"Probably the same person who thought it would be a good idea to let her speak," Walt answered.

I’m not proud of the fact that I watch Wheel of Fortune each night, but there’s nothing else between Jeopardy and the 8 p.m. shows that doesn’t involve getting up and changing the station, so it’s on.

I’ve been watching "at" Wheel for so long that it amazes me the show is still on. I remember going to a greasy spoon for dinner many nights with Gilbert. We would sit in a booth on cracked maroon vinyl seats and order the special of the day (not surprisingly usually something fried), and we’d watch the monster TV screen which would be playing Wheel of Fortune.

Gilbert, one of the most intelligent men I knew, was addicted to Wheel. Gilbert died 15 years ago. We had been watching the show for several years when he died. This show is older than dirt.

And Vanna couldn’t speak then either.

Vanna White is a total enigma to me. Will someone please explain the mystique?

As "beauty" goes, I wouldn’t rate her a 10. She barely makes a 6 or perhaps 7, on a good day, if I’m being generous.

After all these years on TV, you’d think she’d have learned some stage presence, but she still looks uncomfortable before the camera and can’t read a line to save her soul.

Yet she’s been turning those letters for nigh on to 20 years now.

A&E has done a Biography special on her, which I saw a year or so ago. She seems like a nice enough person, but her claim to fame before Wheel seems to have been being runner up in several beauty pageants.

Oh yeah--and she makes quilts. Or is it fig jam? It’s something homey that you wouldn’t expect.

But she gets cheers when she walks out on stage and at the end of each show she gives the classic beauty pageant wave after choking out a few very stilted lines. Occasionally she decides to make a joke, which always falls flat.

I don’t think I want to know what her salary is.

Where do you get a job like that? How do you audition? Word is that the show auditioned a lot of women before Vanna walked in. Apparently they took one look and decided that this was The One.

Obviously they were right. She has staying power.

But I’d still like to know the secret of the mystique. I’ll never understand.

(Of course I’m not letting it keep me awake nights worrying about it)

Oh yeah--and for anybody who’s wondering about the state of my health, I think the above should make it pretty clear that my head is still stuffed up and my brain cells have been affected by all the constant coughing.
