The thing I love about this magnet is that there is no city listed, and no area code and I haven't a clue where we picked it up!

On keeping secrets:

Be a good confidante, and always remember to keep your husband’s secrets. First, even without his knowledge, hide and conceal his misdeeds, faults, or sins, if you know any, so that he will not be ashamed.

PLAGUE

9 March 2001

I have the plague. I don’t know what plague, but I’m sure it’s plague. A simple cold couldn’t feel this bad.

It’s probably a computer virus, given the number of on-line journalists who seem to be complaining about similar symptoms. I’m sure mine is worse. It’s gotta be.

This cold has been kind of having its way with me for the past couple of days--not bad, not good, but just kinda sitting there reminding me that I am Not a Well Woman. But good sense to the contrary, I decided to go ahead with a Breaking Barriers transport that had been scheduled for yesterday. I was also going to meet some friends in Oakland for dinner last night.

The first to go was dinner plans. My cough was telling me that this was Not A Good Idea, so I sent everyone an e-mail and told them they’d have to hold their revels without me.

But I did the transport anyway.

In some ways I’m glad I did. This is Breaking Barriers’ oldest client and they tell me she’s very particular about who drives her. We got along well the two times I’ve driven her before and she was happy that I was going to pick her up.

In fact, I was extremely touched when she asked me if I’d give her a 5x7 picture of myself. Apparently she "only puts pictures of people she likes" on her wall and she’d like to include me in her rogue’s gallery. High praise indeed.

It was going to be a short doctor’s appointment, she assumed. In reality they kept her waiting in the exam room for an hour and a half, so this quick little trip to the doctor turned into a 5 hour deal, what with driving from here to her house--about the farthest from Davis of any of Breaking Barriers’ clients.

By the time I dropped her off, I was very glad I had cancelled out on dinner. The very last thing I wanted to do was...well...anything!

When I got home, I turned off the computer climbed into the reclining chair under several layers of blankets and began to shiver. My I was both chilled and hot and had a low fever, the last thing I wanted was dinner.

Walt fixed himself dinner and heated up a cup of chicken soup for me. I stayed in the chair watching Survivor, and then fell asleep.

Except for a couple of trips to the bathroom through the night, and getting up to get water or another vitamin C tablet because my throat hurt so much, I slept all night...9 hours. That’s more than two nights of sleep for me normally.

This morning everything hurts. My skin hurts, my head hurts, my lungs hurts, even my teeth hurt. There is a growing shrine to used Kleenex overflowing from my wastebasket onto the floor. (The dog is thrilled. There are shredded dirty Kleenex all over the house. Dogs are so disgusting!) I don’t want to admit to what happens when a sneeze takes over my body. It’s not a pretty sight, but Depends and Fabreeze may be involved.

I dropped Peggy a note cancelling our morning chat and wouldn’t even be sitting here at the computer at all except there is a report that has to be out this morning; it’s an emergency. So I’ve propped myself up, am transcribing, and then am going to crawl back under those blankets.

But of course I had to take time out to update the journal.

I’m sicker than I thought.
