Survivor Journals

Bob of
If I Die Before I Wake has invited nine journallers to participate in a Cyber Survivor Adventure.

Every couple of weeks, the group will be issued a "challenge entry". The site will post a excerpt from the challenge entries, as well as the link to the complete entry found on the journaller's own journal site.

After the challenge entry is posted, the nine journallers will vote one of the writers off the site.

The "ousted" journaller will actually remain on the site, but rather than posting further challenge entries, they will act as a judge and commentator.

The first challenge entry has been issued, and can be found at the Survivor Journal website. The actual entries should be completed by
October 1, 2000.

Please take the time to visit, especially once the challenge entries are posted. There is a message board to post your thoughts/comments and also a instant poll where visitors can vote for who they would want to see kicked off the site.

The reasons behind Survivor Journals are simple.

1. To try something new.
2. Increase the interaction of the journal community.
3. The challenge.
4. Increased exposure to all journals involved.

So take a look around, explore all the journals involved.

If you would like to take part in Survivor Journals, Year Two (around Nov/Dec 2000), let Bob know!

TRAVEL AND TOURISM

November 18, 2000

So yesterday I got back in the travel and tourism business again, this time with Nelson in tow. We started the day by driving a client to CARES, so Nelson got to get a taste of my volunteer life.

And then we spent some time at Fry’s looking for a CD writer Nelson would like to bring back to Brasil. We ended up at Ned’s radio station, where Ned gave Nelson a tour (I’d had the grand tour before). He showed Nelson the main console where the “talent” sit during the show, and his own seat from which he adds witty [sic] commentary during the program. And he also showed us how he records the all-night show during the morning show. It’s all computerized, so while the nightowls of Sacramento are listening to Ned explound on things in life he finds frustrating, Ned is home in bed sleeping so he can get up at 4:30 to do the morning show. Crazy life.

We met Marta (who works just across the street) for lunch. We went to this little hole in the wall place that serves hot dogs--but what fantastic hot dogs. And the “small” fries is about the size of two large fries at McDonald’s (they are home-friend, too, not the prepackaged stuff you get from McDonald’s). Ned’s eyes were a little too big for his stomach and he took half of his hot dog home.

Then it was time to be tourists. We went back to Old Sacramento (I swear, I’ve spent more time in Old Sacramento in the last month than I have in the past two years!). Nelson vaguely remembered being there before, but took pictures to show his wife and daughter back home. As a restaurant owner in Sao Paulo, he was interested in finding an “old west saloon,” and was disappointed to find that the place is mostly just tourist shops.

I was attracted, however, by a wagon full of wolves. There is a man around here who is raising money to save wolves, protect their habitat, etc. He had three wolves with him, beautiful animals. I’d never petted a wolf before. His ploy worked; I gave him a donation.

Home into the setting sun. We had a quiet dinner here at home and then Walt went to the theatre, Nelson settled in to watch the Beatles Anthology on ABC and I sat in my office chatting with Peggy in Australia and Diane in Seattle at the same time. We were reliving our experiences in Seattle last month and making plans for our next adventure. Alaska, anyone?

At midnight, I started taping Ned’s overnight show for Nelson. This meant getting up every hour and a half to change the cassette tape, but I did get the show recorded. Of course now I’ve been up since 4 a.m....
