November 25, 2000 On the day after Thanksgiving, I decided to take a walk in the snow. The weather was lovely, there wasn't a lot of snow, but enough to make it nice. And I hadn't had a walk in a day or so. It's 2 miles from the condo down into the outskirts of Tahoe City and that seemed a nice distance to walk. Alice Nan and Walt decided to come with me, and there was some confusion about when we were going, how many were going, how we would meet the others in Reno afterwards, and what needed to be done before we could leave, but we finally did get out of the house and onto the footpath that goes along the highway around the lake. There were patches where the snow was deep enough that you sunk in a bit (fortunately not too many of those, since I had no snow boots and was walking in my regular shoes), some icy patches that made me nervous, since I remember slipping on a patch of ice and ending up at the hospital getting stitches in my head, and some clear patches. It was a lovely walk. I would have liked more snow, for photographic purposes (you can see some photos from the walk, as well as from our whole Thanksgiving weekend at Club Photo, if you're into family photos). We actually walked 2+ miles, as we walked on into town to where we could see the lake without having houses in front of it, and we stopped for coffee at an espresso shop where we sat and watched the Canadian geese flying over the lake and gliding to a stop on the water.
There are folks who just love Reno and Las Vegas. I am not one of them. I don't gamble, rarely drink, and hate crowds, so going out of my way to spend time in a casino the day after Thanksgiving is kind of ridiculous! We met the gambling contingent at the Silverado casino. I suppose as Reno casinos goes it's OK. but the noise of slot machines and the dazed expressions on the faces of the gamblers wipes away any "glitz" for me. It is definitely not my location of choice. We were there to have diner and we chose the fabulous El Dorado buffet. Reno seems to be catering more to families these days, judging by the vast number of children, from infants to teens, that we saw everywhere. The El Dorado is connected to Circus Circus, which even has games for kids while Mommy and Daddy are spending the grocery money downstairs at the Big People's games. The line for the buffet stretched on forever, but we hung tough and surprisingly it only took half an hour to get in. We sated ourselves with prime rib of beef, dungeness crab and peel-it-yourself shrimp, leaving others to fill up on the pastas and other dishes. We topped it all off with Mongolian cheesecake and then got out while the getting was good. Some still stayed behind to gamble some more, but we were just as glad to head back to the condo. We couldn't believe that Walt's mother had another piece of Baked Alaska after we got home. The rest of us were so full of dinner we could barely move!
