"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America
and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation
under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
On Jan. 17, 1706, scientist, publisher and philosopher Benjamin
Franklin was born to a poor family in Boston.
Franklin would prove through a famous kite experiment
that lightning was a form of electricity, leading to his creation
of the lightning conductor. He also invented the bifocals, the glass
harmonica and the Franklin stove. He developed theories of electricity,
heat absorption,
meteorology and ocean currents, and helped develop the first militia
in 1747. He helped draft the Declaration of Independence, was opposed
to slavery and, at age 81 and in ill-health, helped formulate
the compromise that led to the U.S. Constitution.
He died in 1790.
Q: When was "The Star-Spangled Banner" written? What inspired Francis Scott Key to write the song?
A: "The Star-Spangled Banner" was written on September 14, 1814. Francis Scott Key was inspired to write what would become the American national anthem after witnessing Britain's unsuccessful bombardment of Baltimore's Fort McHenry that very night.
Q: Where was the game of golf invented?
A: Scotland is credited as the birthplace of golf, since the sport
flourished there since the 15th century. It was customary, even then,
to follow an exerting round of golf with a trip to the local tavern.
