MANICOUAGAN |
This region is on the north shore of the St. Lawrence between the Saguenay and Manicouagan rivers. It includes large forests, small towns and a cold climate! The St. Lawrence is so wide here that to cross from Baie-Comeau to Matane on the south side takes 2,5 hours! |
Tadoussac. A town founded before Quebec (1600) it lies where the Saguenay empties into the St. Lawrence, where it’s much wider than back home. People from all over the world come here to whale-watch. |
On the Tadoussac-Baie-Ste-Cathérine ferry. That spot in the middle of the river is a whale (I’m not good at action shots!) But what you see behind is the Saguenay fjord, one of the longest ones in the world. |
Baie-Comeau the main town of the Manicouagan (36 000 people). This is the main cathedral. This city was founded in 1936, so there is little history here. Friendly people, though, I had a great time that evening….. |
Manic 5. This is the largest of many dams along the Manicouagan. It's 141m high and it produces 1,5 GW. I couldn’t fit it into the picture. It produces hydroelectric power for the province and many parts of the United States. Hydroelectric power is the main energy source of the province, which powers 80% of all buildings here. |
