NEVILLE LONGBOTTOM
Neville Longbottom is an extremely forgetful Gryffindor boy in Harry’s year. He is one of Harry’s dorm mates, and also one of his closest friends. He’s been around since the beginning, always holding Harry, Ron, and Hermione in high esteem. Hermione is constantly helping Neville in Potions class, and Neville and Ron both fought with Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle, in their first year. Neville has always been an important character, but his importance has been intensified in books four and five. In book four, we learn that Neville’s parents were tortured into insanity by Death Eaters. In book five, not only does Neville join Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, and Luna to the Ministry of Magic in search of Sirius Black, but Dumbledore also reveals that Neville could have potentially been “The Boy Who Lived”. The prophecy that described the one who has the power to defeat You-Know-Who pointed in the direction of two young boys: Harry Potter and Neville Longbottom. However, Voldemort, having heard only half of the prophecy, went after Harry, because he identified with the half-blood boy more than the pure-blood, and thought that Harry would be a bigger threat. Neville makes great strides in his magical ability in book five, as well. Through the help of Harry in the DA, Neville begins to show some magical talent at last. On the same note, during the climactic battle in the Department of Mysteries, Neville informs Harry that he’d been using his father’s wand all these years. However sentimental and touching that may be, Mr. Ollivander tells us in book one that you will never get proper results out of a wand that belongs or belonged to another witch or wizard. Now that Neville needs a new wand, the Death Eaters had better watch out for this round-faced powerhouse hell-bent on avenging his parents. One thing is made clear about Neville in all the books, but particularly book five: he’s important. He is sure to play a pivotal role in future books, and also will prove to be an asset in the second war. Neville’s parents also may have some importance, as well. Was Alice trying to tell Neville something in St. Mungo’s that day? Slowly and surely, we’re beginning to see why Neville made it into Gryffindor and not Hufflepuff.
