| Mark Waid. By the tender age of six Mark no longer believed Santa Claus or Krypton were real. I mean, ca-mon, Krypton exploded in 1939. There's no way it could be real. Anymore. But he still believed in Superman. And that belief led him to a number of positions in comics trade publications. From reporting for AMAZING HEROES and THE COMICS BUYERS GUIDE to being an editor at AMAZING HEROES. This led to a tour as editor at DC Comics. During this time Waid (with writer Brian Augustyn) launched the popular ELSEWORLDS series with "GOTHAM BY GASLIGHT". 1989 saw Waid leave the office of editor and enter the world of the freelance writer. The 90's were a fruitful time for Waid writing for every major publishing house and bringing his unique chops to such titles as "KA-ZAR", "IMPULSE", "FLASH", "CAPT. AMERICA" and many others. Then came the mega-hit "KINGDOM COME" which firmly placed him in the hearts and minds of fans and retailers alike. Waid has the reputation of not only leaving his mark on the titles he writes, but also elevating them. The 21st century didn't see a slow-down for Mr. Waid. Writing an all-too-brief run on "JLA", followed by ground-breaking work on "RUSE" and now guiding Marvel Comic's flagship title "THE "FANTASTIC FOUR". What does the future hold for Mark Waid? Didn't think to ask him. But we did talk a little about the craft of writing . . . Read the interview in WRITERS BLOCK 2003 #1 |
