Protesting the perception that Nebraska is treeless and flat, Griff and I travel secondary roads until we find a park where we hike and camp among wooded hills. Several days later we join the Denver Hash House Harriers for their annual Red Dress Run. Seventy men and women run the streets of Denver, each modeling their favorite red dress while minimizing the beer they spill from their mugs. I drive west into the mountains and The Chief reluctantly climbs steep passes to deliver Griffin and me to my friend Wendy's cabin. We join Wendy and other guests for several days of hiking and fishing high in the Rockies. Lost on one hike, we find ourselves on the estate of the late John Denver where some surprisingly unfriendly people chase us off. With several unplanned days before I need to be in Aspen, I head for Moab, Utah. The Chief develops a significant coolant leak near the state line and I return to Grand Junction where I await an appointment with a mechanic the following day. |
