On our way to Haines, we detour to Valdez, the terminus of the Alaska Pipe Line and the site of the '89 oil spill. The area looks like a scene from a rainforest documentary, but with the addition of glacier-draped mountains. We enter the Yukon Territory again and spend a night in Beaver Creek. I visit the one local bar and meet Frank, the general manager of most businesses in town. Frank is out with his subordinates and after he drinks too much, he becomes belligerent with his staff and picks a fight with a guest at his own hotel. I buy Frank a drink or two, in part to stay on his good side and in part to ensure good entertainment. I drive 150 miles on the worst kept road I have ever experienced and I am thankful to reach Haines, where Griffin and I spend two days before boarding a ferry for a 36-hour ride to Prince Rupert. Exiting the ferry, I give a ride to a girl who is searching for a place to settle for the winter. For two days we discuss the methods and purposes of our travels. Then she wanders off, not to return. I continue south and drive through Vancouver during rush hour before returning to the lower 48 States. |
