In May of 2006, I convinced my wife that we could afford a Catalina 22. I found hull #14757 in Kent Island, Maryland on Craigslist . The boat was in great condition, and was offered at a good price. She is a 1988 Catalina 22, and included a mainsail, jib, storm jib, genoa, and asymmetrical spinnaker. The previous owner was more into speedboats, and really had not used this boat in the 18 months that he owned it. It was obvious right when we pulled the boat. The bottom was covered in barnacles . The original owner boat the boat in Maryland, but only kept it for a few months. The next owner was a man by the name of Richard Hannibal. Mr. Hannibal was quite a popular sailor. He made many modifications to the boat, kept a detailed log of all the modifications, and was well known in the National Catalina 22 Sailing Association . In fact, after his passing, an article was posted in the MainBrace(the NCSA newsletter). Mr. Hannibal named the boat Nana, and she was sailed quite a bit through the years. She is outfitted with a 9.9 hp Yamaha 4 stroke outboard with electric start. The alchohol stove and portapotti are still intact and useable. The older VHF radio was removed, but the mast mounted antenna remains. All the cushions were in great condition, and all we did was a quick cleaning. The cabin had a small amount of mold, but a quick scrub with bleach solved the problem. The water tank is missing, but the sink is useful if you have some jugs of water. The cooler/step is in good condition, but could use an upgrade with a more efficient insulating cooler. The backstay was slightly frayed, and I replaced it with one I bought from catalina direct My first adventure was pulling the boat out of the water onto the trailer Afterwards, my youngest brother, Dan, helped me to lower the mast. We trailered the boat home to Arnold behind the Little Truck That Could (Courtesy of Dan's friend Red). The second adventure was the 800 mile journey taking the boat from Arnold, MD to Atlanta, GA. It took just about 14 hours, but was well worth it. Since then, we have taken the boat to Lake Lanier for the 4th of July. We also took it back to Lake Lanier in August for some Heavy Sailing . Unfortunately, the rudder broke due to some previous water damage, and we were SOL for the rest of the day. In September of 2006, we took the boat to Destin, FL for a weeklong vacation at the Sandpiper Cove. This is a great little resort that has both beachfront access, and harborside docking. We spent two days sailing, one day on the beach, and the remaining days in various states of rainstorms.
