On Kaito Kuroba and the Kaitou

He is definitely the jokester in the 4 geniuses (Shinichi/Conan, Heiji, Saguru and himself). He is usually cheerful, happy-go-lucky, and a kid at heart (pun not intended). Although he usually isn't very serious, he can be quite solemn at the appropriate time. And he has a fiery temper whenever it comes to anyone making a move on his childhood friend, Aoko (cough, Saguru, cough!). Kaito is always willing to help people out, as long as they deserve it, and extends a helping hand to just about anyone, including Inspector Nakamouri when he's feeling down. Of course, this doesn't mean he's always loved. In fact, in the first volume alone, Kaito has been kidnapped and had a robot clone made of him, shot at a couple of times, and even had a voodoo doll made of him, and stabbed. Most of the times anyone tries to inflict any type of hurt to either him, or Kid's reputation (as in dressing up as Kid and trying to steal something just as a publicity thing), he gives them their just desserts (often involving bombs). He's willing to forgive though, like Akako, and seems relatively popular in school. Yeah, just about everyone teases Aoko and him about being married. He is quite charming, and has kissed a few good women as Kid (best proved in the Yaiba vs. Kid file in vol.3) and he can be a gentleman at times. But, I will admit it, he is a bit of a pervert (especially in vol. 1), always breaking into the girl's change room, peeking at Aoko (or any other pretty girl that is)'s panties, and even once commented that Aoko's bust was flat after *cough* having a feel.

Anyhow, back to Kaito. He has a habit of reading newspaper in class and even skipping. Then again, that isn't as bad as running and jumping around the class shooting his card gun and teasing Aoko about wearing white panties as she chases him around with a broom swinging around. Even though he isn't exactly the best-behaved student, Kaito is very smart. And but of course, he dislikes, despises, detests fish. I'd even go so far as to say he's scared of fish. In other words, it's Aoko's secret weapon against him (muhahaha...). He utterly sucks at skating as well, but excels at any other sport. In fact, he seems quite good with a sword, a pro at skiing, and surprising, he’s also good at billiards. And of course, he likes treasure, although he doesn't really understand abstract art, and in my own opinion, has odd tastes in things to steal. Who'd want to steal a bronze statue, or a sword? And as for people who send out fake Kid messages, he usually goes and steals that thing for them. After all, with such a reputation, he has to uphold it, ne?

As Kid, I think he was a very good knowledge of explosives, machinery, and technology in order for him to rig so many things. Everything from stage floodlights to blowing up a Christmas tree. And in the manga, it doesn't really show him actually planting the bomb or switch, he just presses a button and BOOM! And don’t we all remember Kid’s second appearance in Detective Conan, where he was in an internet chatroom group? He’s got to know a few computer tricks, because the police weren’t able to trace where he lived from the computer. Don’t ask me what he did, I utterly suck at computer technicals. He probably hacked or something.

The Kid outfit ensemble has quite a bit a gadgets as well. There's the infamous cape hang glider, where some metal (or something like that) beams extend our from his back and pulls the cape into a hang glider shape, while a belt unfolds which you manually click around your waist, and things that the hand holds also comes out. Plus, there's also a balloon (like those big blimps? I don't really know what I should call it) that pumps up with helium and lets him float away. Sometimes the balloon has a propeller on it, so he can fly around, exactly like a blimp! =P As for equipment, there is my favourite, the card gun! Yay! It's a funky looking gun that shoots out poker cards. Even though it doesn't sound very dangerous, it can be quite lethal. In movie no. 3, the cards blew up in a cloud of smoke. Normally, it can slice, dice, and make stuff go boom. Kaito has very good aim with it too, and it is probably the most used gadget he has (although the hang glider is a close second). Plus, for some reason, Kaito has a lot of blow-up dummies! Like Kid shaped balloons. He either blows it up and make it do something, or drops the un-blown dummy (which at that point looks like a tiny scrunched up ball) and it inflates somehow by itself. There's even one with one of those blimps attached to it, so it would look like he's taking that escape route, while the real Kid is running the other way. I don't know why the police are so blind they can't tell a blow up dummy from the real thing... and of course, he's got little bundles of joy that open up and unleash a sleeping gas. Plus, he always has a walkie-talkie, light bombs, and smoke grenades handy. Those are probably Kid's main weapons. He also has many more, although some do put to question his, uh, professionalism. Think… high powered scooter used to ride down the side of a building, charged up 2 x 2 roller blades to get away, and suction-cup and rope bazookas. Interesting.

As for the Kid himself, he is decked out in a white tux, with a blue shirt, red tie, blue socks (kinda baggy ones too), and white gloves and loafers. And let's not forget the white top hat with the blue sash. His flowing white cape is attached to his shoulders in a flourish and button. Okay, so sue me, my fashion lingo is screwed. On his right eye he wears a silver monocle with a small triangluar prism-shaped charm (in the manga and tv anime it's dark green and in anime pictures it's dark blue) with a white clover on it (it's sometimes drawn like four small and unattatched hearts pointed inwards like a clover, that but's technically incorrect based on the manga, where it's just a clover design. An example of the heart clover is the 2002 Kid calender pic (for May and June)).

Abilities that Kaito possesses are the ability to change his voice without the use of any machinery (like Conan’s bowtie), and his disguises. He’s been Ran, Kogoro, Shinichi, countless police officers, and even Aoko! And those are just a few. I may also mention the time he and Aoko had to seek into a club (adults only) and they had to pretend they were a married couple! (volume 2) And then Aoko got kinda drunk, but I won’t go there.

Kaito and his relationship with Aoko... hmm... Well, they bicker a lot, let me tell you that. Especially since Aoko doesn't really like Kid, and that's the only thing Kaito ever talks about. And often, because of his double life, Kaito lets Aoko down by not being there when she needs him most (remember the file ‘Blue Birthday’?). In fact, when Kaito is out as Kid, Aoko is always left alone because Kaito and her father will be out. She thinks about Kaito a lot, and even though insists that she doesn't like Kaito, she thinks differently. They met when they were little kids in front of the old clock tower, which Kaito stopped (as Kid) from being torn down. Aoko has had some suspicions, but Kaito always finds a way to prove her wrong. If you think about it, this is almost like Shinichi/Conan and Ran's relationship. Kaito and Aoko obviously have feelings for each other, but both never admit it. This is why I like that episode where *spoiler alert!* a Kaito robot clone downloads all the data from the original's brain, and goes to school in his shoes. The robot admitted for Kaito that he likes Aoko. In front of the class too! Hehehe.... And the other episode *spoiler alert!* where Kaito and Saguru go on a bet, winner goes to concert with Aoko. Though Aoko told Keiko, her friend, that she was on Saguru's side, but in her heart, she was wishing that Kid would succeed so she could go with Kaito. I think they make a cute couple, even though they fight. Hey, don't they say, 'you always hurt the ones you love?' Heh heh heh...

Kaito however, despite how he looks during a heist, does not enjoy having to rob people. Yes, he is very good at what he does, and yes, he does always have a poker face on, but once the Black Organization is caught, it’s my opinion that Kaito would probably give up his night job. Nonetheless, Kaito takes great pride in being the phantom thief and being able to outwit the police. He’s his own biggest fan! But seriously, the guy is smart and he knows it! And just because he’s a thief, doesn’t mean he’s black-hearted either. He cares deeply about his friends and family, and puts anything on the line to help them out. Especially Aoko. And Jii. And just about any good person that is in need of help. Usually done by taking the role of Kaitou Kid and helping out, or some other disguise.

In comparison to the Kid in Detective Conan, Kaito is much more serious as Kid, and his success rate is higher. In Magic Kaito, he successfully steals something half the time, the other half, he fails but still doesn't get caught. I think that's just because Magic Kaito is supposed to be more comical and funny than Detective Conan, so funny stuff has to happen to him. But in Magic Kaito, Kaito gets into the strangest adventures. In DC, Kaito also has this thing with pigeons, like attaching a listening device on its leg. In MK, Kaito has a connection with pigeons like any normal magician, just having them appear in magic tricks. That’s why I kind of like Kaito from DC better, because it’s more serious, but most of my friends like MK better because of its ever-present humor content. The art in Magik Kaito is not as good as Detective Conan as well, but towards volume 3, it really improves. The last file, Green Dream, is of the same quality of the first few Conan volumes, which I think is a big improvement. And if you’ve seen the first file and the last file of Magic Kaito, I think you’ll agree.
