Lesson 4 ANTIVIRUS UPDATES

When you buy a new computer you are responsible for its security. If you have an antivirus program installed, it will probably need to have the updates placed on it. The same thing applies to the window updates for your operating system (XP) Windows.

1. Click on your to your ISP(internet service provider)

2. Go to the right lower corner and click on your antivirus symbol.

3. The page that comes up should have a place to check for live updates.

4. Click on and it will retrieve the current updates from the Internet.

5. Check to see that you have the scheduler enabled to work when you have your computer on line. A certain time that you check e-mail or just have your computer running for the update time.

Windows updates

1. Windows updates will be found by clicking START

2. You can click on the windows icon or if you do not see it on the icons displayed click on Programs

3. Above the accessories you should see Windows Update to click on.

4. The Microsoft page will load up from the Internet and you will click scan now.

5. You will need to wait while Microsoft scans your computer to see what critical issues you need to download. If you see that a driver is indicated for download do it after the critical updates or at a later time.

6. All critical issues should be downloaded. This will take some time for a new computer. Service Packs should be done first .You will have to restart the computer so that the program information is installed properly.

7. Each critical issue will give instructions for it’s installing.

8. If installation is interrupted, windows will continue where you left off when you reconnect to the windows update critical issues site.

Zone Alarm is a free firewall that is more effective than the one included with the windows operating system. You should download it from www.zonelabs.com

On the right side of the page you will see Direct Links, go to the fourth bullet down and click on ZoneAlarm (free). This blue hyperlink will take you to another web page with an arrow pointing to Zone Alarm Plus in the middle of the page. To the left bottom of the page is the free download. In red you will see ZoneAlarm and under it Download, Click on the red download button to get to the Firewall . The download wizard will direct you through each step. We will discuss any questions you have on the firewall in class. This firewall resist worms getting into your computer from the internet on open ports you may have on your computer.
