shrI AchArya Madhwa  established a  system of worshipping  shrI KrishNa, in Udupi, by rotation by his eight designated disciples. shri VishNu thErTha, (younger brother of  vAsudEva; the former name of shrI AchArya)  was one among them. With these eight sages, eight institutions were started  and  they were popularly known as 'maTha'. After a while, these maTha  were named by the founder saint. Thus the maTha started by shri Vishnu thErTha became famous as shrI Vishnu thErTha maTha. Later on  this became popular as 'kumBAsi maTha', since the saints in the lineage of this maTha established a center in 'kumBAsi', 30 Kms north of Udupi. During shrI vAdhirAja thErTha's time, this become popular as 'shrI vAdhirAja maTha'. shrI vAdhirAja thErTha spent most of the  later parts of his life in 'Sode' and established many temples there. shrI vAdhirAja thErTha entered 'vRandavana' in Sode. For many more years later also, 'Sode' was the main center for the saints in this lineage and this maTha is now popular as 'sOde  shrI vAdhirAja maTha'. Here is a list of saints who worshipped shrI KrishNa of Udupi in this lineage.
