The death penalty is an effective punishment for murder. Research has found that 66% of all Americans approve of the death penalty as punishment for capital crimes such as first degree murder (Sharpe). It has also been discovered that the death penalty has even greater civilian support internationally (Sharpe). It has been determined that it is less expensive to employ the death penalty than to feed, house, and supply medical needs to institutionalized individuals. Additionally, the death penalty decreases crime rates simply by imposing a fear factor that prevents future crimes. Furthermore, with lower crime rates, the innocent are more protected from violent acts. The death penalty represents the 'eye for and eye' philosophy of justice. In otherwords, in the case of murder, if is just for the murderer to be put to death since that was the fate he/she imposed on his or her vicitm. An important role when dealing with a loved ones death is closure. Quite often, the death penalty brings the closure to the victims friends and family that is essential to the healing process. Based upon the information researched and presented here, we believe the death penalty should be strictly enforced.
