HUMANITIES 9: CIVICS & ECONOMICS (C/E)

HONORS CONTRACT

MR. LANE

blane@wcpss.net

We will offer Honors Civics & Economics in a heterogeneous classroom setting.  Students who register for the Honors section will follow a more rigorous syllabus and assessment process.  For these students, this will include, but will not be limited to, the following…

1.      Complete two book readings, with corresponding assignments.

Founding Brothers by Joseph Ellis

Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser

As agreed upon by those teaching C/E, every student enrolled in Honors Civics & Economics will read these two books.

Founding Brothers

We will read Founding Brothers first.  Students must purchase it by August 25.  Students

can find the book at area bookstores (B Dalton, Waldenbooks, Barnes & Nobles, etc.).  Amazon.com

is another great resource for obtaining books, especially in light of the limited shelf supply at local

stores.  The paperback price of the book is approximately $14.00 (new).

      Fast Food Nation

Fast Food Nation will be read during the Spring Semester.  It may be purchases through the same

means as Founding Brothers.  The paperback price of Fast Food Nation is approximately $14.00.

      Difficulty Purchasing Books

If you have difficulty, financial or otherwise, in purchasing your book, please see me as soon as the

difficulty arises!!  Former students have donated books that may be borrowed.  However, everyone

must have the books by the date set by the teacher.

2.      Complete 2 other major reading requirements.  These reading assignments will take the form of two additional books:

Nickel & Dimed  - we will read this during 2nd Quarter

The Millionaire Next Door – we will read this during the Spring Semester

3.      Complete 1 major project per Quarter.

4.      Complete other additional or differentiated assignments as given by the teacher.

Students not registered in the Honors section may also complete Honors assignments for extra credit.  Interested students may discuss doing so with the teacher.
