Judicial Leader

The president has many duties concerning the judicial branch of government. The President affects Americans through his role in being a judicial leader. In this webpage, you will learn more than you ever have in your whole life.

As a judicial leader, one of the most important roles of the President is to appoint judges to the Supreme Court and other Federal courts.

The President has power to grant pardons.  A pardon is an issue of declaration of forgiveness and freedom from punishment.  The President also has the power to  grant amnesty.  Amnesty is similar to a pardon, except that it applies to a group rather than an individual.  A reprieve may also be given to delay a person's punishment until a higher court can rule on the case.  These are three of the President's very important powers.

The Supreme Court has final authority to determine whether or not a law is acceptable under the Constitution.  This greatly affects the lives of all Americans.  They must all live by these rules every day.

Presidents can affect the Government long after their term in office has ended.  Once the President has appointed the Supreme Court Justice, they usually hold that position for life.  Therefore, by appointing new justices to the Supreme Court, Presidents can continue to influence the country long after they have left the presidency.
