Now as the war is over I feel totaly safe and confident here. Still, the country is not safe. Guards armed with guns is not an unusual sight, nor is army vehicles. Drivers and guards are standard with nearly all companies.
Still, after all I have heard I do not feel any problems in walking on the street, in fact I run quite a lot (with my father, I feel that there is no problem). I think you could meet problems if you were drunk, if you walk alone on the sidewalk along a less traficated road or if you carry expencive things, like gameboys or cameras.

The winter of 1975 was the beginning of Africas longest and bloodiest war. Since the comunists (MPLA) ruled the country it was very influated by Sovjet. Sovjet donated a monumnent which that never was completed when Agostino Neto (the first president) died. Although the ruling party of Angola was supported by Sovjet, UNITA and Jonas Savimbi was not, they were supported by USA. (This conflict started during the cold war so if Sovjet supported somebody USA had to support their enemy, at least that was how they did it). USA let Jonas Savimbi train his rebel group in America for later to declare him a terrorist.
In 1992 as the second election was held by an UN who thought theyt had full control. Which they realy did not. MPLA won, something that would have surprised if it hadn't been for Savimbis behaviour the last two months before the eletion.
See the election Results here. UNITA accused MPLA for cheating, but could not prove it. So the election results was approved
20th November '94 was also a date worth to notice. This was the date of "The Lusaka Protocoll" which was supposed to bring Angola to peace. Something it did, until 1998. By then UNITA had broken its secound peace agreement and dos Santos (president) had enough.
When Jonas Savimbi finally fell 22nd February 2002 a lot of people ment that there would now be peace, something which did not happen befor 4th of April. There has been no known attacks since that.
