MEMORIES OF THOSE OLD STEAM TRAMS

The days of the old steam trams at Broken Hill are long since gone – they stopped running more than 74 years ago.  But when they were operating they provided the city with a transport system when privately – owned cars were a sign of opulence.

The first of the Government – operated steam trams began operating on 15th February, 1902, when the rolling – stock comprised two engines and four carriages.  At its peak, the system had 14 engines and 36 carriages. Eventually the gradual increase in privately – owned transport and the introduction of buses made the trams uneconomic, and the trams finally stopped running on 31st December, 1926.
