BACK HOME TITANIC MEMORIAL On April 14, 1912, the 45,000 ton Titanic, then the largest ship afloat, struck an iceberg and sank whilst on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York, resulting in the loss of 1,513 lives..the band-conscious citizens of Broken Hill were stirred at the bravery of the ship's bandsmen who played "Nearer My God to thee" as the ship was sinking. In 1912 the A.M.A. band launched a public appeal to construct a suitable memorial. A special committee was formed, with H.M.Mullins as Treasurer, and it was decided that improvements would be made to the band rotunda at the Central Reserve. - Now called Sturt Park - In 1913 the appeal for funds to construct a memorial to the Titanic bandmen realised only 150 pounds and it was decided to erect a marble column in the Central Reserve. On 21st December, the unique memorial ( Broken Hill's first monument ) was unveiled by Mayor T.F.Hynes and the A.M.A and city, and the Salvation Army Bands paid a musical tribute to the heroic Titanic Bandsmen . The Broken Hill Titanic Memorial of a broken classical column symbolises a life taken before its due time, as was the case of the bandsmen and passengers who lost their lives through drowning. The “Titanic” Memorial Bandstands. Besides Broken Hill, as a result of interest by the Victorian Band Association and a generous donation of 150 pounds, a Titanic Memorial Bandstand was erected in 1915 in the Sturt Street Plantation, Ballarat. The octagonal bandstand is amongst the most important Edwardian bandstands in Australia. Surmounting the bandstand's pinnacle is a weathervane, fittingly adorned by a small silhouette of the ill – fated Titanic. Also in Kadina, South Australia a decision was made in March 1913 to erect a bandstand in the Victoria Square rotunda to commemorate the bandsmen of the Titanic. The stand was made by Hume Bros. Adelaide. The Mayor of Kadina, Mr. C.A.E. Hall, accepted the bandstand in an official ceremony. The plaque read “ This stand was erected to the memory of the Bandsmen of the ill – fated Titanic by the members of the Kadina Town, U.L.U., and federal Bands 1913.” |
