First of all, I would like to say that I am honored to be featured in this month’s profile. I have read previous profiles and am astonished and proud of how well everyone is doing.
LIFE AFTER BHI After graduation, I went to Brooklyn College. I remember my first day: I felt like a little kid on the first day of kindergarten - all alone on this big, beautiful campus. I really missed the security of BHI. Eventually, I made many friends and had a wonderful college experience. I graduated with a BS in Health Science. Upon graduation, I was confused more than ever before. I had to face the real world and I had no clue what to do with my major. I had prospects of going to dental school, but after many years of working as a dental assistant, I realized it was not for me. Immediately after graduation, I was very lucky to find a job at the Metropolitan Jewish Health System. In the meantime, I was on a hunt for a career that’s reliable and always in demand. Luckily, I found out about an accelerated nursing program - a program for those with a Bachelors degree and certain prerequisites who want to pursue a career in Nursing. CAREER CHOICES AND ASPIRATIONS I currently attend the Accelerated Nursing program at SUNY Downstate. The program is only 15 months long and it begins in June (if anyone is interested). I only have six months left. If you are looking for a medical career but don’t know what to do or where to go, I highly recommend nursing. It is a very rewarding career with numerous opportunities. For women who want to have that extra time for their families, nursing is an excellent choice. Hospitals now offer 3 day-12 hour shifts as well as the possibility of being a fee-for-service Homecare nurse where you create your own schedule. I am contemplating on continuing my education for Nurse Practitioner (NP), but first, I will need a few years of experience on the medical-surgical floor. FAMILY LIFE It seems like only yesterday I was finalizing the details of my wedding. But the older I get, the faster time flies – our one-year wedding anniversary is on March 27th. I am married to a wonderful man. Married life is fabulous. My husband has been really supportive of me. Since all I do is eat, sleep and breathe nursing, he has taken on practically all of the household chores. I don’t think I would be able to do it without him. BHI MEMORIES I often reminisce about my BHI days. The class of 2000 just had this great unity. We had our petty fights here and there, but we were all like sisters. I vividly remember our play rehearsals, singing, and our very interesting discussions about “life” with our teachers. The high school years are very important to a teen’s psychological, social and behavioral development. BHI has molded me into the person that I am today. I could never forget it nor will I forget my classmates and teachers. I must admit, I have not been in contact with many of you, but thanks to this website, I still feel very close to you all. ON A FINAL NOTE I would like to reiterate my gratitude to the creators of this site and for allowing me to share a part of myself with you. If anyone would like to find out more about the Accelerated Nursing Program or if you just want to say hi, feel free to email me at Lilok717@yahoo.com, I would love to hear from you. Good luck to you all in your endeavors! |
