LaVon Wright Peterson
At age 57 our beloved wife, mother and grandmother LaVon Wright Peterson passed away quietly in her sleep at home on January 29, 2000. She had carried on a valiant and brave struggle against ovarian cancer for two years.
Born LaVon Wright in Rexburg, Idaho on November 11, 1942 to parents Alma Karl Wright and LeNelda Cherry, she spent a happy childhood there before moving with her parents to Bountiful, Utah at 8 years of age. She grew up and lived in the same house in Bountiful until age 19 when she met Perry Peterson at the University of Utah in April, 1962. They were married 4 months later in the Manti Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on August 15, and immediately left for Montreal, Quebec, Canada where 4 years were spent putting Perry through medical school.
She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Perry A. Peterson, M.D., daughters Teri, Paula (Mrs. Timothy Barney) of Salt Lake City, Holly (Mrs. Noah Lowenstein) of Austin, Texas, and sons Scott of Bountiful, Utah and Christian of SLC, Utah. She has 6 grandchildren.
LaVon's life was an ideal of unselfish service to others. She rarely did anything without consideration of the good it would do for husband, family or friends, or for her church. In high school she was ward organist, later she was an active teacher and leader in the Young Women's Organization. She spent many years as a Primary teacher before serving as the President on both Ward and Stake levels. Many remember her as PTA president, as a leader in the Festival of Trees charity, and serving in the Stake Relief Society presidency. Her husband's work took him to Guam for a time where she found a new opportunity to serve, and when Ardeth Kapp of the Church General Board visited, she was presented with a special Certificate of Excellence Award for her inovative and loving work with young women. Her family always came first and this was seen in her devotion to her children, and later during her parent's final years in caring for them, sometimes traveling from Chicago to Salt Lake every few weeks to do so. Even in her final hours she expressed concern for her family and their welfare.
She specified a closed casket service which will be held Wednesday February 2nd at noon at the Ensign Stake Chapel 18th Ave and Hilltop Road in Salt Lake City. Friends may visit with the family at Larkin Mortuary 260 E South Temple from 6-8 PM Feb 1st and at the chapel prior to the services.
Interment will be beside her parents at Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetary 10600 So 1700 East, Sandy, Utah.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
