REISEBERICHTE über KENIA (Safari)
AUF SAFARI im September 2002
Nach Ankunft mit dem Flugzeug holt mich das Team
von Best Camping Tours wie vereinbart am Flughafen von Nairobi ab. Nach einem
kurzen Briefing fahren wir nach Naro Moru am Fusse des Mount Kenya. Spaziergang
durch den Wald, plaudern mit einem einheimischen Professor, der schon in der
Schweiz war, über sein Land und die Probleme.... Das Hotel Mountain Rock ist
wirklich schön mit seinen gemütlichen Räumen inkl. Kaminfeuer im Schlafzimmer
und einem wunderschönen Garten mit einem kleine See.
Am nächsten Tag überqueren wir (Ich und Jan
aus Holland und der Fahrer John) den Äquator und haben einen schönen Blick auf
Mt. Kenya. Das Safari Fahrzeug ist ein umgebauter Nissan, der ein aufklappbares
Dach hat, das sich zum beobachten der Tiere eignet. Wir fahren ins Samburu
Tierreservat das eine sehr trockene Vegetation hat. Wir campieren in der Nähe
des Flusses: rund um das Lager hat es eine Menge Baboon (Affen) die alles
mitlaufen lassen was rumliegt. Wir gehen auf Pirsch: Es gibt viel zu sehen ein
Gepard läuft majestätisch durch die Gegend, ein Leopard verlässt seinen Baum
um etwas essbares zu suchen, bei einem Spaziergang in der Nähe des Camps überraschen
uns beinahe Elefanten die sich im Dickicht verborgen haben. Speziell für diesen
Nationalpark sind die Giraffengazellen und die Oryz Antilopen die fast
ausschliesslich hier vorkommen.
Weiter geht die Fahrt zum Nakuru See entlang des
Rift Valleys, mit Stop bei den Thompson Wasserfällen. Der See ist sicherlich zu
einem sechstel bedeckt von Flamingos aber auch einige andere Wasservögel wie
Pelikane, Löfflern alles in allem ein gigantisches Vogelspektakel. Ausserdem
sind Rhinozerosse, Wasserbüffel, Thomson Gazellen usw. im Park zu sehen.....
Inzwischen zu Acht geht die Fahrt weiter zur
Masai Mara, die Fortsetzung der Tanzanischen Serengeti. Es ist offenes Grasland,
meist schon "abgegessen" von den riesigen Herden der Gnus, einige
Schirmakazien bieten ein bisschen Schatten und entlang der Flüsse und Wasserlöchern
gibt es einige Büsche oder Waldgebiete. Die Tierwelt ist einmalig: Immer wieder
sind Löwen bei verschieden Aktivitäten zu beobachten (Jagt, Sex oder meist am
Schlafen), wir beobachten Hyänen die gerade ein Zebra erjagt haben beim Fressen
die Mäuler sind noch rotgefärbt, Giraffen die immerwährend am kauen sind,
Gazellen und Antilopen die immer auf der Hut vor ihren Feinden sind, Elefanten
beim walzen im Dreck oder Wasser, ein Leopard beim Schlaf im Baum, Geier und
andere Vögel die um die Reste der Beute an einem
Wasserloch kämpfen..... Wir fahren zum Mara River der Grenze zwischen
Kenya und Tansania: Riesige Herden von Gnus (tausende), Antilopen, Zebras
wandern in die eine oder andere Richtung, Flusspferde baden am Fluss und die
Krokodile sind so satt, dass Sie nicht einmal mehr die im Fluss verunglückten
Gnus essen. Auf der letzten Pirschfahrt ist auch noch eines der sehr selten
geworden schwarzen Nashörner zu sehen und eine Löwenfamilie mit ihren Kinder.
Ich habe jeden Tag der Safari, was auf Suwaheli
übrigens Reise heisst, genossen diese spektakuläre Tierwelt wild erleben zu dürfen.
Auch das übernachten in der Freien Natur im Zelt mit den Geräuschen der Tiere
nachts ist ein besonderes Erlebnis. Einziger
„Minuspunkt“ war unser Fahrer und Führer John dem jeglicher Enthusiasmus für
die Aktivitäten gefehlt hat und sein Wissen über die Tierwelt beschränkte
sich auf ein absolutes Minimum.
Danach verbringe ich zwei Tage im berüchtigten
Nairobi mit waschen, ausschlafen, Internet, ein wenig ausgehen, Spaziergänge
durch die Stadt, einkaufen... Es geht weiter mit dem Shuttlebus entlang der
Savanne und über kleine Hügel nach Moshi (Tansania).

Eine Safari ist ein unvergessliches Erlebnis für jedermann der die
Tiere auf freier Wildbahn mag. Die Wildparks aber auch die Landschaft
sucht wohl seinesgleichen. Wer dies einmal erleben durfte wird sich wohl
ein ganzes Leben daran erinnern; jeder Tierbericht wirkt nun besonders
und lässt Erinnerungen aufkommen nicht zuletzt weil man es mit eigenen
Augen gesehen hat. Die Menschen in Kenya sind zuvorkommend; ja manchmal noch fast unterwürfig (Der Gast is König). Das Reisen entlang der Hauptrouten ist machbar, obwohl Strassen teils in einem schlechten Zustand sind und man lange braucht. |

| Masai Mara in seiner schönsten Zeit, mit einer unglaublichen Anzahl von Tieren. Die Migration lässt sich besonders während dieser Saison gut beobachten. | Nairobi, ein nicht ganz ungefährliche und auch sonst merkwürdige und unspektakuläre Stadt. |
| Der Samburu Nationalpark, der kleiner und weniger besucht ist jedoch mit vielen Spezies von Tieren aufwarten kann. | Statt für Ausbau, Entwicklung, Kontrolle oder Zufahrtswege wandern die happigen Eintrittsgebühren sonstwohin...... |
| Lake Nakuru Nationalpark in dem es das wohl grösste Vogelspektakel der Welt zu sehen gibt. | Besucher und Führer interessieren sich oftmals nur vordergründig über die Tierwelt, Umgebung oder die Kultur des Landes Oft muss einfach das Photo für zuhause stimmen. |

On SAFARI September 2000
After arrival with the airplane in Nairobi the team Best camping tour
did picked me up from the airport. A short Briefing and afterwards
with the Nissan converted as a safari vehicle we drive to Naro Moru at the foot
of the Mount Kenya. A walk trough the forest, chat with a Kenyan
professor about the county matters in the late afternoon.... The hotel is
very beautiful and cosy (chimney fires in the sleep area, beautiful garden....)
On the next day we (I and Jan from Holland) cross the equator and have a
beautiful view up to Mt. Kenya. We drive into the Samburu national park which
gets a very dry vegetation. We camp close to the river: around the camp
Baboon (monkeys) try to catch whatever they can get (food, shoes, utilities). And
then to safari: There is so much to see a majestically
cheetah is slowly passing by, a leopard is leaving his tree for a hunt, on
a short walk near the camp we almost get overran by some elephants. Specially
and pretty much unique are also the giraffe gazelle and the Oryx
antelope.
The travel continues to Lake Nakuru along the rift valleys with
stop at the Thompson waterfalls. An absolutely great bird spectacle is
waiting, the lake Nakuru is almost covered by flamingos (pink) and some other
water birds such as pelicans. In addition we spot a rhino, water buffalos,
thomson Gazelles etc. in the park..... Now the travel goes to the Masai
Mara, the continuation of the Tanzanian Serengeti. It is open grass land (short
because already mostly eaten of the millions of gnus), some acacias offers
a little shade and along the rivers are some bushes or forest areas. The animal
world is unique: a lot of lions mostly sleeping, wandering around and once
having sex , we observe Hyenas just made a kill (Zebra), giraffes always eating
and chewing, Gazelles and Antelopes always watching for their enemies,
elephants which are rolling in the dirt or water, a leopard in the
tree, vulture and other birds circle over a dead animal..... We drive to the
Mara River the border between Kenya and Tanzania: Enormous herds of Gnus (thousands),
Antelopes, zebras move in one or the other direction, hippos are
taking a bath in the river and the crocodiles are so full that they even refuse
to eat the dead gnus (killed bye the crossing of the river) laying on the river
banks....
I did enjoy every day of the safari, which in Swahili (the national
language) means journey to see these unique and spectacular wild animal life.
Another exciting part is to sleep overnight in tents surrounded by the noises of
the animals. Just our guide John doesn’t seems to had fun anymore and his
knowledge about the animals wasn’t even the minimum I hoped – but he really
knows the area.
Now I did spend to days in Nairobi with washing, sleep out, internet,
going out, walks trough the city and shopping. With the shuttle bus along the
savannah and over small hills to the boarder of Tanzania and from there to Moshi.

OPINION / EXPERIENCES / SUMMARY |

A safari is something you want forget if you like animals in the wild. There
are unfortunately not many places left where you can see this amount of
wildlife in their natural environment. It's very intensive and special to
see with your own eyes. An absolute highlight. There is always a smile on a Kenyan Face; some are even submissive to their guest even if it's sometimes just for business. Travelling individually on the (back)roads of Kenya is not so easy and takes a lot of time. |

| Masai Mara in it's best season with an unbelievable amount of different animals. To see the migration of the wild animals going on. | Nairobi, a place where didn't really felled safe and with no big things to do for a visitor. |
| The Samburu wildlife park is smaller and less visited, but with an interesting mixture of animals some are even just to see in this park. | The high entrance fees for the wildlife parks are unfortunately not used for expansion, development, better control system or a better road to the parks; no it goes mostly to someone's private pocket. |
| Lake Nakuru national park is probably the place to see the biggest bird spectacle in the world. | It's terrible how many visitors and even guides don't now much about the wildlife and environment and often don't really care as long a good picture can be taken.... |
| Driving along the Rift Valley with small villages and the agriculture heart of the county is a good thing to see something else as the national park. | |
