The Miracle Of Christmas
Written and Copyright 2000 by Ashley Sullivan
Mac drove down the highway and peered through the windsheild. The falling snow blinded her view, but she drove on. She was almost home, at least she thought she was. Why she was actually going home she didn't know, but the fact was she was going. All that was in Genoa City was memories, memories of Billy Abbott! She had never forgiven him for that night last summer. As far as she was concerned he had lied to her the whole time they'd been together! When she had graduated she had vowed never to look back, and she'd kept that promise until now!. But after a long talk with her grandmother she had been pursuaded to come home. Her mind was suddenly jerked away from her thoughts when bright lights shined in her review mirror. What the.... she said to herself. She pulled overe in the other lane to let the car go by. The car zoomed by her and then slowed down a ways up the road. "What a jerk!" she said. Mac tried to concentrate on the road, but her thoughts drifted back to Billy. 'Why does he do this to me?' she wondered. 'Why do I even let him effect me this way?' Suddenly the car swurved and spun in circles.  "Oh my G**!" Mac cried as she turned the wheel, but it was too late and the last thing she saw was the snow bank her car was headed for.
The clock struck twelve and it chimed in the dinning room. Then suddenly the phone rang next to the bed. Billy rolled over and and groaned when he saw the time. His eyes adjusted to the darkness and he reached to answer the phone on the fifth ring.
"Hello?" he answered.
"Hey little brother." Jack said.
"Jack do you have any idea what time it is here?" Billy asked.
"It's an emergency." Jack replied.
"What is it? What's wrong?"  Billy asked. "Is it dad?"
"No Billy dad's fine."
"Well is it mom then?" Billy asked.
"Well as far as we know your mom is fine, but no its not her."
"Well who is it?" Billy asked.
"I wasn't sure if I should call or not, but I thought you'd want to know." Jack said.
"Jack just tell me!" Billy cried who was now fully awake.
"Its Mackenzie." Jack said sadly.
"What do you mean?" Billy asked. "What happen?"
"We're not sure she was  apparently in some sort of accident." Jack answered.
"Is she okay?" Billy asked.
"I don't know Katherine just called, apparently Mackenzie was on her way home from college for Christmas and she hit some ice!"
"Oh G**!" Billy whispered. "Can you tell me anything else?"
"Sorry but like I said I wasn't even sure I should call." Jack said.
"No, you did the right thing." Billy said. "In fact I will be on the next flight out of Paris!"
"Are you sure?" Jack asked.
"Of course." Billy replied. "Let everyone know I am on my way!"
"Sure, I'll see you soon." Jack said. "Bye." Billy held the phone in his hand a moment longer then returned it to the receiver.
Billy slowly pulled himself together then hurried to pack a bag. An hour later he was seated on the Jabot jet headed to the states. Billy's thoughts stayed on Mac the whole flight an even though he tried he could think of nothing else. 'Why had they never resolved their diffrences?' he wondered. He thought of her all the time, but he wondered if she did the same. 'If she did it was probably in pure hate!' He couldn't think of that now, he had to concentrate on wither she was okay or not. And he'd find out soon enough!
The limo pulled up in front of the Abbott's estate and Billy climbed out before the driver could open the door. He hurried to the house and called out "Is anyone home?"  He walked into the living room and stood in front of the fire place. He glanced at himself in the mirror and frowned. His hair was a mess and his eyes were bloodshot. 'I look like "h***' he thought.
"Billy what are you doing here?" John asked as he walked through the dinning room door.
"I heard about Mac." he replied.
"Oh I see." John sighed. "Yes it really is too bad"
"What's too bad?" Billy asked suddenly worried.
"Don't you know?" John asked seriously.
"Know what?" Billy questioned. "All Jack told me was that was that she was in an accident."
"Well son, Mackenzie is in a coma and they're not sure what internal damage there is." John replied.
"Oh G**!" Billy cried "I have to get to the hospital!
"Wait son you should get some rest first!"  John said. "You look like h***."
"Thanks dad," Billy frowned. "But I've got to see Mac first."
"I really don't think that's a good idea." John said. "You know you two haven't been on the best of terms lately, in fact when was the last time you two talked or even laid eyes on each other?"
"Dad whether or not Mac knows it or not, she needs me." Billy insisted. "I love her no matter how she feels and maybe this is what we both need."
"If you insist." John sighed.
"I do." Billy said.
"Fine, I guess I'll see you later." John replied.
"I've got to get to the hospital." Billy said as he headed out the door to the limo.
"I hope you know what your getting into?" John whispered.
Billy walked off the elevator on the fourth floor of the intensive care unit. He looked down he hallway and walked towards the nurse's station. "Can I help you?" a nurse asked as she looked up from her computer.
"Yes I'd like to know Mackenzie Reynold's room number." Billy replied.
"Are you family?"
"Well no but...." he started.
"I am sorry but only family are allowed to visit."
"But you don't understand!" he insisted.
"I am sorry sir, but those are the rules." she replied "Now if you'll excuse me."
"No you don't understand!" he cried.
"Sir this is a hospital, now I am going to have to ask you to leave!" the nurse hissed. Billy suddenly spotted a list on the counter and scanned it for Mac's name. Smiling a sly smile he spun on his heel and walked toward the elevator. He felt the nurse's eyes on him but he didn't care as he walked past the elevator and toward Mac's room he heard the nurse cry out, "Sir where are you going?" He kept walking and just as he was about to approach Mac's door an arm grabbed his elebow. "Sir I told you...." she started.
"Is there a problem?" an elderly voice asked from behind them.
"No ma'am." the nurse said. "I am taking care of it!"
"Billy is that you? My lord what are you doing here?"  Katherine asked.
"I came to see Mac and this nurse is givng me problems." Billy said.
"You know this young man?" the nurse asked.
"Yes, he's a family friend." Katherine replied. "It's all right he can see Mac."
"If your sure, but let me know if there's a problem."
"Thank you, but there won't be." Katherine replied with a warm smile as she looked at Billy.
"Thanks."  Billy replied.
"It's nothing." she said.
"How is she?" Billy questioned as he walked into the room.
"No better, no worse." Katherine answered. "Ah I am going to go down and get some coffee, do you want some?" she asked.
"No thank you, I'll stay with her." he said.
"Okay." she replied as she walked toward the door. Billy approached the bed and stared down at Mac's still frame.
"Oh Mac, why did this happen to you?"  he whispered. He softly picked up her hand and brought it to his lips. "I've missed you so much." he sighed. "But I wish fate had brought us together under better circumstances." He stared at Mac's face and tears filled his eyes. Her head was bandaged and there was cut above her left eye. The eye was also black and blue and her lower lip was split. But even with all of her bruises she was still the most beautiful girl he'd ever seen, nothing would ever make him think differently! "Beautiful!" he whispered. "Can you hear me?"  Mac laid still in bed and Billy's heart sank. 'There's got to be something I can do!' he thought to himself. 'There just has to be!'
"What are you doing  here?" a deep familar voice asked from behind him. Billy spun around  and stared into the hurt eyes of.....
Raul stood in the doorway with hurt and anger flaring in his eyes. "I asked you a question." he said. "What the H*** are you doing here?"
"What does it look like I am doing?" Billy asked. "I am visiting Mac!"
"Well you can leave because she wouldn't want you here." Raul replied as he walked into the room.
"How do you know that answer to that question?" Billy asked.
"You know she wouldn't, don't play games!"  Raul replied. "Just leave!"
"I'll leave when Mac tells me too." Billy stated.
"The H*** you will!" Raul hissed. "Don't you think you've caused enough trouble, enough heartache?"
"Look Raul, its obvious you're still angry, but that was over a year ago. Can't we get past it?" Billy asked.
"You're right Billy I am hurt and I am angry , but you have no right telling me to get over it!" Raul cried. "You lost the privlage of doing that a long time ago when you lied to me about Mac!"
"You know what Raul? I don't have to take this!" Billy said. "I've come to see Mac not argue with you!"
"Fine so you've seen her, now go back to Paris were you belong!" Raul hissed.
"I'll go when I am good and ready!" Billy replied as he tried to control his anger.
"I won't let you hurt her again!" Raul cried. "I'll kill you first!"
"You're still in love with her aren't you?" Billy asked suddenly when he realized that was the basis of Raul's anger.
"That's none of your concern." Raul argued.
"You don't have to tell me," Billy replied. "I can see it in your eyes! And at the moment all you're worried about is that she may still love me!"
"How dare you assume something like that!"  Raul cried. "What right do you have?"
"What right do I have, I don't have a right, but it doesn't change anything now does it?" Billy shot back at him.
"I can't deal with this anymore." Raul replied. "I am outta here, but you haven't won this fight yet!"
Billy watched with sad eyes as Raul disappeared down the hallway. "Why do you have to act this way Raul?" Billy asked aloud. "Can't we get past this?" Billy pulled himself together and turned back to Mac's still body. "I am so sorry beautiful. I've hurt you and so many people, most of all you, and there's nothing I can do to fix it."
"I am sorry sir, but I am going to have to ask you to leave." the nurse said suddenly. "Visiting hours were over a long time ago!"
Billy nodded his head then the nurse disappeared. "I'll be back beautiful." he said before he leaned down and placed a kiss on her forehead. "You can count on that!" He smiled down at her with tears in his eyes and walked out of the room. He didn't want to leave, but he didn't want to cause anymore trouble. He'd be back tomorrow to see what he could find out from the doctors. And as he walked out into the snow towards his car he vowed to do anything in his power to save Mac. There was no way he was going to loose her again, no way in h***!
The next weeks seem to last forever and there was no change in Mac's condition. Billy spent most of his time at the hospital and did everything in his power to see that she got the best care possible. Then one day as the doctors were doing a daily check Mac spoked. " Billy."  she whispered.
Billy shot up from where he sat and hurried to stand next to the doctor.  "Billy?" she whispered again.
"Mac I am here." he whispered as he picked up her hand  "Can you here me?" Her eyes didn't open but her hand tightened around Billy's.
"What happen?" Billy asked.
"She must be having a dream." the doctor replied. "It's not uncommon."
"But I thought she was in a coma?" Billy questioned.
"She may be coming out of it, coming and going, at this point its hard to tell!"
"Billy." Mac whispered for the third time.
"Mac, Mac wake up!" Billy waited for her to respond but then her grip loosened and her hand went limp again. "No come back Mac!" he called.
"I am sorry Mr Abbott, but like I said these things things are not uncommon." the doctor said.
"But its a good thing right? An improvement?" Billy asked.
"It could be, but only time will tell." the doctor responded.
"D**init!" Billy hissed. "There has to be something we can do!" he replied. "I am sick of waiting!" Billy stated.
"But there's nothing else you can do." the doctor said. "Now if you'll excuse me I have my rounds. I'll be back to check on her later." Billy didn't even respond he just stared at her motionless face.
"You not giving up! I am not going to let you!" he whispered. He pulled up a stool and sat next to the bed. He took her hand in his and said, "I love you Mac, did you hear me? I said I love you!" There was no response, but he really expect one? "We'll get through this together! I am never leaving you again!" He stared at her a moment longer then buried his face in his hands and cried.
An hour later Billy walked out of Mac's room and headed towards the cafeteria. "I'll be back in a second." he told Kay as he passed her in the hall.
"Okay." she replied sadly. He walked into the cafeteria and poured himself a cup of black coffee. He quickly paid for it and then headed back upstairs. As he walked back off the elevator and walked towards Mac's room he saw people rushing in and out of her room.
"What the...."  he cried as he heard machines going off! "No!" he cried. He dropped his coffee and ran towards the room.
"No!" Katherine said suddenly appearing and grabbing him by the arm. "Let them do there job."
"But what's happening?" he questioned. "What the h*** happened? She was fine when I left! She was perfectly fine!"
"I don't know!" Katherine cried. "It's like she just let go."
"But how? Why?" he asked as tears ran down his cheeks.
"I don't know Billy, I just don't know!" she cried.
"I won't let her go!" Without warning he pushed past Katherine and into her room. The doctors were busy trying to revive her and didn't notice. "Mac," he whispered. "I am here please don't go!"
"What's he doing in here?" one of the doctors asked. "Get him out of here now!"
Two of the other doctors approached and dragged him out screaming  "Mac no!" he cried. "Please don't leave me!"
"Billy settle down!" Kay sighed.
"But..." he started. "I love her!"
"And she loves you." she replied.
"She just doesn't know it yet and I won't let her go I won't!" he cried.
"Billy if it's meant to be she'll come back." Kay replied softly. Suddenly they wheeled Mac through the doors and down the hall.
"Where are they taking her?" he asked hysterically.
"I am not sure." Kay replied as she stood and walked off down the hall.
"I won't loose you Mac you'll get through this!" he whispered before he buried his head in his hands and let the sobs flow through his body.
Several hours later Mac's doctor walked down the hall. "How is she?"  Billy asked. The doctor stared at him for a moment and didn't say anything. "D**it tell me!" he cried. "How is she?"
"She's stable for now, but we'll have to monitor her closely." he replied.
"Thank you God!" Billy sighed happily. "When can I see her?"
"They should bring her back any minute now." he replied just as Mac was wheeled down the hall.
"Thank you doctor!" Billy smiled. Then he turned and walked into Mac's room. As Billy approached her bed he noticed that she looked more pale than before and her face was swollen. "Oh Mac why can't you fight this?" he asked aloud. "People need you." He sat down next to her bed and picked up her hand. "I need you most of all!" he whispered. "And I am going to tell you that just as soon as you wake up!" He watched Mac's face and smiled. She looked so peaceful, more peaceful then he'd ever seen her before. Billy lifted his hand and brushed her rosey cheek softly. He had longed to touch her for so long and it pained him to know that this was the only way he was able too.
"How is she?" a voice asked behind him. Billy turned to look into the caring eyes of Jack.
"What are you doing here?"
"I've come to check on both of you." he replied. "The whole family is worried."
"I am fine, but we almost lost her today." Billy replied sadly.
"Your kidding me." Jack sighed. "Do they know anything?"
"Not a thing, at least they haven't told me anything." he answered.
"Jeez she's such a fighter, I wonder why she's choosing to give up?"
"I've asked myself the same question a million times." Billy replied as he looked at Mac again.
"How about we go and get some coffee?" Jack suggested.
"I don't want to leave her." Billy replied.
"Come on little brother it will do you some good." Jack insisted.
"I guess." he sighed and stood and walked toward the door. As they walked down the hall they passed Raul. He glared at Billy then walked towards Mac's room with flowers and a teddy bear.
"He didn't look too happy." Jack noted.
" No he still hates me, more then ever." Billy replied.
"That's too bad." Jack replied. "You two were so close!"
"I know...I miss him."  Billy replied. "He still loves her so much but...."
"So do you?" Jack asked as the walked off the elevator.
"With all my heart." Billy sighed. They walked in and bought two cups of coffee and then found a place to sit.
"So how's have things in Paris been?" Jack asked trying to change the subject.
"Well the overseas Jabot companies are keeping me busy, very busy but I don't mind." Billy replied. "It keeps my mind of of....other things."
"I always knew that's why you volunteered to go."
"Yeah well like I said it keeps me busy." Billy said. He sipped on his coffee and then stared down at his hands.
"Are you okay little brother?" Jack asked.
"No Jack I am not!" Billy answered. "I love her and I am afraid she's slipping away from me all over again!"
"Its going to work out." Jack said quietly. "You've got to stay positive!"
"I know but its hard." Billy stated. "I am so tired of waiting and doing nothing!"
"At this point that's all you can do," Jack replied. "Just be with her, let her know you still care. Believe me she knows your there."
"I hope so." Billy said sadly.
"I know so." Jack replied. "Now come on let's go back up there and talk to the doctors." They both stood and headed to the elevator, both praying that Jack was right, but doubting that he was.
Several days later Billy was sitting next to Mac's bed just listening to her breathe and when he looked up her eyes opened!
"Mac?" he whispered. She turned her head toward him slightly and there was a look of disbelief on her face.
"Billy?" she rasped. "Where are you?"
"I am right here Mac, can't you see me?" he replied.
"No I can't see anything." she replied calmly.
"What?" he gasped. "Wait right here I'll go get the doctor!" He hurried out of the room and down to the nurse's station. "Mac's awake." he said quickly.
"What did you say?" the nurse asked.
"Mackenzie Reynolds is awake!" he said again.
"Oh my!" she replied then hurried off to fetch the doctor.
Billy hurried back to her room and took a hold of her hand. "I am here Mac, everything will be fine." he informed her.
"What are you doing here?" she asked. "What happen?" she asked just as the doctor walked in.
"Well now Mackenzie. It's Dr. Willams." he said kindly. She smiled and waited for him to continue. "How do you feel?" he asked.
"Terrible." she replied.
"Any pain?" he questioned.
"No not really." she replied. "My head hurts a little."
"Anything else?" he asked.
"Yes," she stated. "I can't see anything."
"What?" he asked.
"I can't see anything!" she repeated.
'That's odd.'  he said to himself more then to anyone else. "We'll have to run some tests, but I am sure its nothing serious."
"Are you sure?" Billy asked.
"Yes I am sure, she'll be fine." Dr. Willams replied with a warm smile. "I'll go sign you up for some tests and we'll get this cleared up, but for now get some rest!"
"I will." she replied. The doctor left quickly and Billy and Mac were left alone.  "What are you doing here Billy? I thought you were in Paris?"
"I was but Jack called me about two weeks ago and told me about your accident." he replied. "I came as quickly as I could and I've been here ever since."
"Really?"  she asked quietly. "Why?"
"Why?" he asked. "Because....because I love you Mac!" Mac said nothing but just stared straight forward. "Mac?" he whispered.
"No Billy, not now." she cried. "I don't want to talk about this now!"
"Fine." he replied. "I should go make some phone calls anyway." He stood and walked towards the doorway. He stopped and looked back at her. "I am not going anywhere Mac, I am staying until your out of here." She didn't answer him but he saw tears stream down her face. He turned sadly and headed towards the waiting room to make some phone calls.
The next afternoon Billy was sitting with Mac when the doctor came in with some test results."Well?" Billy asked.
"I am afraid I have some bad news." he said. Billy looked at Mac and saw tears fill her eyes. He grabbed on tightly to her hand and waited for the doctor to continue. "Somehow she severed a nerve which is causing her blindness." Dr. Williams said. "And at this point we're not sure if she'll ever be able to regain her sight."
"Oh God!" Billy whispered. "There has to be something you can do!"
"I am sorry but all we can do is wait." Dr. Willams replied.
"Wait?" Billy cried. "I've already  waited!"
"Its very simple Mr. Abbott, either she'll regain her sight or she won't." he replied calmly. "Once in a week we'll have her in for tests and monitor her progress, but right now that's all we can do!"
"No I don't accept that!" he said. He turned to Mac and saw tears run down her face. "I am going to get you the best money can buy and and I am sure your grandmother will feel the same." She turned to the sound of his voice but said nothing.
"I'll leave you two alone." the Dr. said. He left quietly and Billy cursed him for not being able to do more.
"I am so sorry Mac!" Billy whispered he reached down and took her hand. "We'll work this out, I promise!"
"Billy how do you know anything can be done?" she asked through her sobs. "I may be blind for the rest of my life!"
"No you won't!" Billy insisted.
"But Billy...." she stated.
"No Mac, stay positive." he replied. "You will get through this and I'll be here until you do!"
"But what if I don't want you here?" she asked as she turned her face away from him. Billy couldn't say a word, did she really hate him still?
It was still another week before they released Mac from the hospital and Billy was there everyday to make sure every thing was done to make her comfortable. He picked her up in a limo and they rode in silence to the estate. When they arrived the door was opened and he helped her up the stairs into the house.
"Mackenzie!" Esther smiled when she walked through the door. "I am so glad your home!" Mac smilled faintly and then allowed Billy to lead her to the sofa.
"Darling." Kay smiled as she sat down next to her. "We've all missed you and...."
"Grandma I know." Mac sighed.
"Let's just take one day at a time." Kay said.
"Can I get you anything Mac?" Esther asked.
"Ah how about some tea?" Mac asked.
"Sure." Esther smiled. "And I'll take it up to your room."
"I am so thankful that Billy has been here." Kay said. "I don't know what I would have done without him."
"Yes I am sure he has helped you quite a lot." Mac answered.
"And he has been kind enough to offer to stay here for awhile." Kay said.
"Oh is that really necessary?" Mac asked.
"Dear with your father gone to India again someone needs to be here to help you." Kay replied.
"But...." Mac stated.
"No buts." Billy said firmly.
"Fine but I am feeling quite tired." Mac said trying to change the subject.
"Here I'll help you upstairs and Esther can help you get ready for a nap." Billy offered. He helped her up from the couch and led her to the stairs. Without warning he scooped her up and carried her up the stairs.
"What are you doing?" Mac cried. "I am blind not crippled!"
"The doctor said to take it easy for awhile." he replied. Mac frowned but didn't argue anymore.
Kay watched them disapear and then whispered to herself, 'I think this is just what you need Mackenzie.'
Later that night Billy took a tray with Mac's dinner on it upstairs to her. He walked down the hall and tapped on her door.
"Come in." she answered. Billy walked in and sat the tray down next to her bed. "Who's there?" she asked.
Billy smiled a little then answered "It's me."
"Oh." she replied softly.
"Good to see you too." he laughed.
"Sorry." she replied. "What did you bring me?"
"Ah Esther made vegetable soup and hot rolls." he replied.
"It smells good." she said.
"Yes it was wonderful." he replied. "Are you hungery?"
"A little." she answered. He sat down next to her and spoon fed her the soup.
"Mmmm its good." she said. "Delicious in fact!"
"I'll give Esther the compliment." he grinned. She finished the soup and then he sat the tray aside. "Do you feel like company?" he asked.
"Sure." she replied.
"Great, so how's college?" he asked.
"Good, well sort of." she replied.
"What do you mean by that?" he asked puzzled.
"Well my grades are good, I made the dean's list in fact." she replied.
"That's great." he replied.
"Well almost," she replied. "My grades are good, but I am not very involved."
"So what's wrong only worring about your grades?" he asked.
"Nothing but I feel I should be doing more you know, getting the most out of the college experience."
"Yeah I know, but your grades are what counts." he said.
"I know but..." she stated. "Never mind let's talk about something else."
"What do you want to talk about?" he asked just glad they were talking.
"Um...What's it like living in Paris?" she asked couriously.
"It's  wonderful and beautiful," he replied. "But I don't get out a lot."
"Why is it that you moved there?" she asked.
"Business mostly but I need to keep busy to keep my mind off of....things." he answered.
"You mean us?" she asked.
"Well yeah." he replied.
"Oh." she whispered.
"But don't think that you pushed me to move there." he said quickly. "The chance appeared and I took it. I thought at the time it was the best thing to do."
"For who?" she asked.
"Me I guess." he replied. "And you of course but then you left too!"
"Yeah I needed to get away and I planned on never coming back," she said. "All there was here were memories!"
"I know what you mean....look Mac."
"Billy I don't want to talk about this anymore." she said quietly.
"Why?" he asked.
"Because....because its to painful and I am trying to forget it ever happen." she replied. "I have enough to worry about!"
"But Mac...." he said. "We have to talk about this sooner or later!"
"No we don't!" she cried. "Let the past be the past and let me move on to the future!"
"But Mackenzie we have so much we need to sort through if we're at least going to be friends again." he pushed.
"Who said we were friends again?" she asked.
"Well I thought since we were talking again that...we were at least friends." he answered.
"No Billy we're far from it." she said. "I don't know if we'll ever be able to be friends again. Its too painful!"
"Mac, if you'd just listen to me..." he insisted. "If you'd just tell me what your thinking...What you're feeling maybe we could get past this!"
"You want to know what I am thinking what I am feeling?" she asked with tears in her eyes. "I used to think about when I closed my eyes all I could see was you making love to Brittany. And now I can't open my eyes and get rid of the picture its always there! Do you know what that does to me?"
"Mac I am sorry." he sighed. "But what can I do?" he asked.
"Nothing!" she screamed. "You've said you were sorry a million times or more, but it doesn't make the picture go away or change what happen or how I feel!"
Billy sat there and tears filled his eyes. "Please Mac, can't you forgive me?" he asked.
"I don't know Billy." she whispered. "I don't know."
"Fine," he said standing. "But I won't give up on you Mac, I won't!" He walked to the door and looked back one more time. Mac sat on the bed with her head in her hands while sobs shook her body. Billy whiped tears from his eyes and closed the door behind him before he headed back downstairs.
Mac heard the door click shut and didn't sense his presense. "What have I done?" she asked herself out loud. "I love you Billy but....." more sobs shook her and she tried her hardest to settle down but couldn't.  What was she to do now? She was blind. Everything was done for her and it might be that way forever! And to make things worse she had to live with Billy. Would he never give up? If only he'd leave her alone maybe she could forget about him and move on with her life. But the only question was where was his life going to go if he did leave?
The next morning Billy walked into Jack's office.
"Hey little brother!" Jack said surprised. "What are you doing here?"
"Ah...I just came to visit you just to talk." Billy replied.
"About......?" Jack asked. "Wait let me guess, you want to talk about Mackenzie!"
"Well yeah." Billy replied as he sat town on the couch.
"I understand you're staying at the estate." Jack said as he sat down in a chair across from Billy.
"Yeah to help out since Brock is gone." Billy replied.
"Are you sure that's such a good idea?" Jack questioned.
"Well I don't know if it is or not, but it gets me close to Mac." he answered.
"I see, have you talked at all?" Jack asked.
"We did last night." Billy replied.
"And how did that go?" he asked.
"Well it started okay, we talked about school and Paris then we got to the topic of why we both left." Billy said.
"And how did that go?" he asked.
"Not too good." Billy replied. "She told me that she wanted to move on with her life and forget things ever happen."
"I can understand where she's coming from," Jack stated. "But where exactly does she think her life is going to go?" he asked.
"I am not sure," Billy said. "I mean I want to be there for her and I am going to be until she realizes that she needs me, and believe me she does need me."
"I am sure she does, but she has to realize that before you two can move past anything." Jack replied. "Just be patient and don't push her!"
"I am trying not too, but sometimes I just get so frustrated." Billy sighed. "She is so stubborn but it always one of her best qualities!" Jack laughed then watched Billy stand. "I should be going."  Billy said. "I don't want to be gone too long just in case something happens."
"Okay but stop by again and let me know how things are going." Jack replied.
"I will." Billy said with a faint smile before he walked out the door.
'Little brother, I hope you know what you're doing.' Jack said to himself.
Billy walked to the estate and then into the living room. 'Where is everyone?' he asked himself.   He sat down on the couch and then all of a sudden he heard a loud thump from above!
"What the...." he cried. He hurried up the stairs and down the hall to Mac's room. "Mac!" he called. "Is everything okay?" he called. He got no answer so he barged right in. He found Mac lying on the floor feeling around fror something. "Mac?" he whispered. She looked up at the sound of his voice and tears were streaming down here face.
"I....." she cried.
He hurried over to her then he bent down and scooped her up in his arms. "Everything is okay I am here now."
"I just dropped my..." she started to say but sobs shook her body.
"What did you drop?" he asked.
"My....my hairbrush." she stammered. "I knocked it off the stand so I tried to find it." He sat her down on the bed ands looked around her room for her hairbrush.
"There it is." he said. He picked it up off the floor and went back to the bed.  "Let me help you?"  he offered. Mac turned around on the bed and Billy softly brushed her long silky brown hair. He felt Mac sigh as she relaxed and he smiled to himself. He smoothed her hair down with one hand and then ran his fingers through it. "Your hair is so beautiful!" he whispered close to her ear. "I've always liked it."
"Really?" she asked.
"Yes." he replied as he touched it again. Mac turned toward him and it was almost as if she was looking into his soul. He suddenly reached out and touched her cheek softly and to his surprise she leaned into it. "Mac...." he whispered as he leaned forward.
"Billy..." she sighed. His lips touched hers and a spark shot through them. The kiss was much deeper then Billy had expected or intended it to be, but Mac didn't pull away. She moved her hands up around her neck and leaned into him. He laced one hand through her hair and the other one stayed touching her cheek.
Suddenly Kay called from down the hall. "Billy are you here?" The spell was broken and Mac pulled away. She leaned back against the headboard and allowed Billy to help her back under the blankets. She bit at her bottom lip and waited for him to speak. But when he did it wasn't the words she hoped to hear.
"I better go see what she wants." he said.  Mac only nodded and when she heard him shut the door she let the building tears fall.
"Stupid!" she cried. "You're stupid!" She snuggled down under the blankets and prayed quietly for sleep, but it never came. She was left with only the feeling of his lips on hers and his scent all around her.
Billy closed the door behind him and then leaned against it. 'Was that the right thing to do? Did he ruin things or make things worse? She hadn't said much! Did that mean she regreted it? There was so much hunger so much need in that kiss! It had to meant something didn't it?'
"Billy, there you are." Kay said as she walked toward him. "I've been looking for you."
"What did you need?" he asked.
"Well that can wait, is my granddaughter still awake?" she asked.
"I think so." he replied. "I am going downstairs if you need me."
"Okay." she said as she touched the doorknob. "Billy wait a minute!"
"Yes, Mrs C.?" he replied.
"Is there anything wrong, anything I should know about?" she asked.
"No everything is fine." he replied.
"Are you sure?" she asked concerned.
"Yes I am positive." he answered and then headed down the hall.
Kay shugged her shoulders and then knocked on Mackenzie's door.
"Its me darling." she called. "May I come in?"
"Sure." Mac called. Kay opened the door and walked over to sit next to her.
"How are you feeling?" she asked.
"I am fine I guess." she replied.
"What do you mean by I guess?" Kay asked.
"Well something just happen." Mac answered.
"What was it darling?" Kay asked.
"Billy just kissed me!" Mac blurted out. Kay sat there for a moment and when she didn't respond Mac said, "I am so confused!"
"About what?" Kay asked. "Do you love the boy?"
"Yes of course I do." Mac smiled.
"Well then what is there to be confused about?" Kay asked. "Tell him how you feel!"
"It's more complicated then that." Mac replied.
"I don't see how?" Kay responded.
"Its hard to explain." Mac said.
"The only way to clear things up is to talk about it darling." Kay replied.
"I know but...." Mac stated.
"You can make all the excuses you want Mackenzie, but you know the right thing to do." Kay smiled. "Just follow your heart it will lead you in the right direction." Kay stood and kissed Mac on the forehead. "I'll check on you later. Try to get some rest."
"I will grandma." Mac smiled. She heard the door click shut and then she was left alone with only her thoughts for company. 'What am I going to do?' she wondered.
A week later Mac and Billy were sitting in the living room preparing for Christmas.
"I can't believe Christmas is only a week away!" Mac sighed. "Which means I've been out of the hospital for a week!"
"Come on Mac, think positively." Billy said as he sat down next to her. He pulled several boxes close and began wrapping them one by one. "No peeking!" he teased.
"That's not funny." she said with a little giggle.
"Sorry." he replied. "What is it that you want for Christmas?"
"You mean besides my sight back?" she asked.
"Well yeah." he replied sadly.
"Um...." she thought. "I really don't know."
"Well I want to get you something." he said.
"You don't have to get me anything." she said with a smile.
"I know....but I want to." he replied.
"I know you want to but...I don't know what I want." she smiled.
"It seems your grandmother knows what you want!" he laughed.
"What makes you say that?" she questioned.
"Half the presents under the tree are for you." he grinned.
"You're kidding me." she replied.
"Nope." he replied.
"But how am I supposed to get her anything?" Mac asked.
"I could get you something," he offered. "Just tell me what you want to get her."
"But its not the same as picking it out myself." she sighed. "But then again I may never be able to do much for myself ever again!"
"Oh Mac," he said as he saw tears fill her eyes. He pulled her into his arms and rubbed his hand up and down her back. "Everything is going to be okay," he whispered. "I'll make sure of that!"
Mac leaned away and wiped her eyes. "Billy," she said. "There's something I need to tell you."
"What is it Mac?" he asked. Suddenly the doorbell rang and he stood up to answer it. "Hold that thought," he said as he smiled. Billy hurried to the door and opened it. "What are you doing here?" Billy asked.
"I asked you a question!" Billy hissed. "What are you doing here?"
"I could ask you the same question," Raul replied. "But I am here to see Mac, so move out of my way!" Raul pushed past him and walked into the living room. Billy closed the door and followed Raul.
"Billy who's here?" Mac asked.
"Its me Mac." Raul replied.
"Raul...." Mac whispered. "What are you doing here?"
"I came to see how you were doing and to bring you a Christmas present." he replied.
"You didn't need to do that," she said. "I mean you didn't have to bring me a present."
"But I wanted to." he smiled. He turned and glared at Billy. "Could you leave us alone for a minute?" he asked.
"I..." he stated.
"Billy, it's ok." Mac interrupted.
"I'll be in the kitchen if you need me." he replied as he walked toward the doorway.
When he was gone Raul walked over to Mac and pulled her into his arms and held her close.          "I've really missed you and I realize that now since I almost lost you." he said.
"I've missed you too." she said. He finally let her go and they sat down on the couch.
"How are you handling all of this?" he asked.
"Better then I was a week ago." she replied. "Billy is really helping me through this."
"Do you have to talk about him?" he asked.
"Actually Raul I think we do," she replied. "Its been way too long and I think it's time you understand why some things were done the way they were."
"But Mac I've forgiven you and moved on, but as far as Billy is concerned I don't ever care to talk to him again!" he said.
"Raul...listen to me please!" she begged. "I love you but I still love Billy too!"
"No don't say that!" he cried. "Not after everything he's put you through!"
"Raul that was a long time ago." Mac replied. "Can't we get past it and all be friends again?"
"You and I can be friends, but never Billy and I!" he yelled. "Never!"
"But Raul," Mac said with tears in her eyes. "You don't understand?"
"Maybe I don't want to understand." he said standing. "Maybe it makes me feel better to hate him. Did you ever think about that?"
"No I didn't Raul, but don't you think I still hurt too?" she asked. "Don't you see everytime I used to close my eyes I would see Billy and Brittany making love, but all I had to do was open my eyes and the picture would be gone! But now I can't open my eyes Raul, I see the picture all the time! So don't talk to me about hurt!"
"I am sorry Mac." he whispered. Mac stood and stepped away from him, but she hit the table and fell to the floor. Billy had been listening to the whole conversation from the kitchen and he also heard her fall. He rushed into the living room and over to Mac.
"What the H*** happen?" he asked as he scooped her off the floor.
"Billy you can put me down!" Mac snapped. "I just tripped and didn't need you to rescue me!"
"Sorry I was just trying to help you." he replied as he set her on her feet.
"I know that, but there are things I can do for myself." she said.
"Fine you let me know when you need me!" he snapped. He turned and walked out of the room.
"Billy wait!" Mac cried.
"Let him go." Raul said from behind her.
"Don't start Raul!" she said.
"Answer me one question Mac," he said. "Do you really still love him?"
"Raul I..." she sighed.
"Don't say it, I guess I all ready know the answer." he replied. "I see things clearly now!"
"What do you mean by that?" Mac asked.
"You said you loved me but you also loved Billy." he replied. "But what you really meant was that you loved Billy, but that you only cared for me, more like a good friend, is that it Mac?"
"Raul that's not what I meant I do love you, but it's not more as a friend."
"I am sorry you feel that way because I still love you Mac and I think I always will!" Then he turned and walked to the door. "I'll be here for you Mac, but it may not be forever!" he said then he was gone.
"God!" she cried. "Why did you do this to me?" She colasped to her knees and cried. 'No!' she told herself. 'Get a hold of yourself!' But it was no use she felt like the loneliest person in the world.
Billy stood in the doorway and watched Mac cry. 'What was he suspposed to do? Go to her or leave her alone?' She had changed her mind so many times that it hurt to try anymore. But no matter how hard he tried to fight it he knew his heart would always belong to her.
"Mac?" he said as he walked toward her.
"Billy?" she said. He crouched down next to her and helped her to her feet.
"Come sit down." he said as he led her back to the couch. "Now what was it you were going to tell me before Raul came over?" he asked.
"Well Billy...." she started. "I don't know how to say all this." she said.
"Come on you can tell me anything." he replied as he took her hands in his. They were shaking and he was a little afraid of what she was going to say. He stared at her for a moment and then finally she spoke.
"Billy I love you!" she blurted out.
Billy gasped and his mind was reeling."You do?" he asked.
"Yes I always have but..." she answered.
"Don't say it Mac....please don't look back!" he pleaded.
"I won't." she whispered. "I am never going to look back again!"
"I love you too Mac." he said. Billy pulled Mac into his arms and held her close. She stared up at him with tears of joy in her eyes as he pressed his lips to hers.
"Billy." she sighed. Her arms found there way around his neck and his wrapped around her waist.
"Mac," Billy breathed. "I am never going to leave you ever again."
"Promise?" she asked shakily.
"I promise you." he smiled. They kissed again and it seemed as if the whole world stopped.
Two days before Christmas Mac was sitting downstairs when Billy walked into the room.
"Is that you Billy?" she asked.
"Yes, I am right here." he said as he rested a gentle hand on hers.
"Can I ask you a question?" she asked.
"Sure what is it?" he asked.
"Are there bright lights on in the room?" she asked.
"No," he replied. "Why do you ask?"
"Because I can see light," she replied. "Like light at the end of a tunnel."
"Are you sure?" he asked excitedly.
"Yes I am positive." she grinned.
"Come on we're going to the doctor." he replied. He helped her into her coat and they hurried down to the car. They drove to the doctor's office in silence, both praying that her sight was returning. They pulled into the parking lot and Billy steered Mac into the building. He signed her in and then they waited for her to be called.
"Ms. Browning." the nurse called finally. They stood and she said, "This way please." They followed her to an examing room and then they waited for the doctor.
"Are you nervous?" he asked.
"Very." she replied. "What if nothing is really happening?"
"What have I told you this entire time?" he asked as he took a hold of her hand.
"To stay positive." she replied just as the doctor walked in.
"What brings you by Mac?" the doctor asked.
"Well doctor I am seeing light." she replied with a proud smile.
"Really?" he replied. "Well let's have a look, shall we?" He helped Mac into the examining chair and then went to work determing wither her sight had in fact returned. After several minutes he turned to Billy and smiled.
"It looks like her sight is returning." he said.
"Really?" Billy asked. The doctor nodded his head and Billy replied, "This is wonderful, Mac your going to see again!"  Mac was sobbing again and she reached for Billy. "I told you, you would get through this and you did." he said softly.
"I can't believe this!" she said between sobs. "I don't know what to say."
"How long until she regains all her sight?" Billy asked.
"It's hard to say. It could return tomorrow, in the next several weeks, or months, or...."
"Or what?" Billy asked.
"She may regain only part of her sight." he replied.
"But Dr. Willams said she would either regain her sight or she wouldn't so if she is why wouldn't she regain her full sight?" Billy asked.
"These things are complicated Billy but I am sure she'll regain her sight completely." Dr Kirsch replied. "Come back for another cheek up after Christmas okay?"
"Sure." Billy sighed as he helped Mac to her feet. She leaned against him as they walked to the car. "Everything will be fine I promise." he reassured her. She nodded her head against his shoulder, then sat down in her seat. They drove back to the estate then Billy helped her upstairs to take a nap. "I am going to be out for awhile, but Esther is here if you need her." he said.
"Where are you going?" she asked.
"I have some last minute shopping to do." he replied. She nodded and then snuggled down under the blankets. He kissed her then hurried down to his car and into town.
Christmas morning came quickly and Mac was up waiting when Billy came to help her  downstairs.
"How are you feeling this morning?" he asked.
"Wonderful." she said with a smile. He led her down the stairs and into the living room where Kay and Esther were waiting.
"Merry Christmas darling." Kay said warmly. "Did you sleep well?"
"Yes." Mac replied. "Okay I want to give my presents first." Mac said.
"Present?" Billy and Kay asked at the same time.
"I wasn't aware you'd gotten presents?" Kay questioned.
"Just wait." Mac grinned. "Billy I love that gray sweater you have on! And grandma that is a lovely blue outfit, is it new? And Esther I love how you've decorated the Christmas tree this year!" All three of them stood stunned their mouths on the floor. Suddenly Billy grinned and scooped Mac into his arms.
"You can see!" he laughed.
"Oh dear why didn't you tell us sooner?" Kay asked.
"I could only see clearly this morning, but my sight is back to normal!" Mac replied when Billy finally sat her down.
"Oh Mackenzie this is wonderful!" Esther smiled.
"It's like a Christmas miracle!" Billy smiled. Mac smiled and walked over to the Christmas tree.
"Are we going to stand around here all morning and talk or are we going to open presents?" she asked.
"Well by all means start opening darling!" Kay laughed.
"Wait mine first!" Billy said. Billy walked over to the tree....he picked up a small package from under the tree then handed it to her.
"What is it?" she asked.
"Open it and find out." he smiled. Mac ripped away the paper and revealed a black velvet box. She looked up at him and she smiled. She opened the box and revealed a diamond ring with rubies on either side of the diamond.
"Oh Billy its beautiful!" she sighed.
"I was hoping you'd like it." he replied. "But here comes the rest."
"The rest?" she asked.
"Mackenzie, will you marry me and make me the happiest man on earth?" Mac's eyes filled with tears and she nodded yes because she couldn't find the words. Billy swept her into his arms again ad kissed her like he'd never kissed anyone before. And they promised themselves that this time there would be no looking back.
