Avengers #46
(November 2001)

Title: Absolute Mastery
Story: Kurt Busiek
Art: Manuel Garcia/Bob Layton/Tom Smith

Summary: The Master of the World steps in as a major new player in the war against Kang the Conqueror! Using his advanced technology, the Master erects strongholds to protect major cities around the globe from Kang's forces. Realizing that the Master's technologies could prove the key to victory against Kang, the Wasp orders a small unit of Avengers to infiltrate the Master's stronghold and gain access to his equipment... by any means necessary! Given her background in espionage, Warbird is the clear choice to lead Silverclaw, Quicksilver and Yellowjacket in the assault on the Master's Lair! Warbird's team of Avengers easily gains access to the Master's base but are quickly discovered and set upon by his Plodex Wolves!

Meanwhile, we get another glimpse at the Scarlet Centurion. Once more, Marcus is distracted from the conquest of Earth by his growing attraction to Warbird! This time, he is interrupted by Kang who warns his son to be wary of such distractions!

Comments: The cover to this issue is truly appropriate! Warbird right alongside four of the most iconic, recognizeable Avengers! This issue is another step in Kurt Busiek's advancement of Warbird as a major part of the Avengers mythos! Warbird assumes a leadership role for the first time! This is something that Kurt has been building towards for a while now! Slowly, he's been demonstrating and highlighting Carol's abilities as a strategist, her experience in espionage, her competency as a fighter and her investment in the team and its inner workings! Hmmmmmm....
