Trading Cards & Sketchagraphs

The influence of Marvel's marketing machine stretched far and wide making its presence known around the world. This set of Ms. Marvel trading cards was discovered on eBay from a seller in Argentina. The cards are dated 1980 and feature Ms. Marvel in her original Kree costume. They were released as a part of a larger Marvel Superheroes set.

Once upon a time, Ms. Marvel graced a set of trading cards in the United Kingdom! My latest find on eBay, this unique card set was issued in the UK in 1979 by Wimpy Burgers. This series of 20 cards featured Marvel Super Heroes and Super Villains. The fronts of the cards showed representations of 20 different "Marvel" characters: Spider-Man, Hulk, Thing, Silver Surfer, Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, Green Goblin, Dr. Doom, Ms. Marvel, Loki, Daredevil, Dr. Strange, Dr. Octopus, The Vision, Moondragon, Spider-Woman, Hawkeye, Mephisto and Captain Marvel. The backs of the cards featured the series title and descriptive texts. These cards were given as a free premium with "Wimpy" burgers. The cards measured is 3" in length and 2" in width.

Carol was off in deep space during the heyday of Marvel's trading card frenzy in the late 80s and early 90s, so didn't actually make it onto many of their trading cards. Recently, the Amalgam character combining Carol Danvers and Huntress received the trading card treatment. As Binary, Carol was also included as a rare, "One Per Deck" Overpower Game card. Each of the Starjammers were featured as part of a Starjammers team set. Marvel's recent attempts at a card-based games included MARVEL: ReCharge. This game featured a couple of different Warbird cards: a standard Warbird player card and a special card. Both shown here are foil versions of these cards. Marvel's latest entry into the gaming card industry is in the popular VS. series distributed by Upper Deck Entertainment. Carol has appeared in their most recent set AVENGERS ASSEMBLE! and was in a team shot from a previous set.

The thirteen cards above are from the Marvel Creators Collection released in 1998. This set featured one-of-a-kind cards called Sketchagraphs featuring pencil, ink and even colored drawings by professional comic artists. Most of the images above were graciously provided by Bianca, Sketchagraph guru and site manager at Bianca's Ultimate Jean Grey Page. Visit her site to view her vast collection of Sketchagraph cards featuring Marvel heroines! A big thanks to artist Denver Brubaker for allowing me to display his Ms. Marvel sketchagraph!
