LINK UP is a program, started at Charlie's Bird House, and designed to LINK UP responsible pet care providers with Single People with Pets.

All too often, individuals living alone have a difficult time finding responsible pet care (pet setting services) for their companions if they need to be away from home for any length of time.  Many things call all of us away from home without notice:  family emergencies, illness, and injury.  People living alone may not have the support systems in place to provide adequate care for their companions while they are away.  Some individuals may be so isolated from social contact, and without close family nearby, that others don't even know they have pets.
The Staff at Charlie's Bird House would like to encourage all pet-oriented social/service clubs and organizations to seek out and inform the single pet owners of the importance of preparing for the provision of services prior to the need arising.  It is essential to provide these single pet owners with a STARTING LINK for assistance during emergencies.
This STARTING LINK can be something as simple as a phone number to someone in your club -- someone that will take on the responsibility of LINKING UP responsible pet care services with the pets and their owners.  The STARTING LINK can be a 3x5 card with a name and phone number posted on the bulletin board at the local Senior Citizen Center.  The STARTING LINK can be a club member offering to speak at local clubs/organizations geared toward single members: Parents without Partners, Senior Citizens Groups, church groups for single church members -- there are many others.
Another STARTING LINK can be your area Registered Nurses and Vocational/Practical Nurses groups, hospital auxiliary groups and other groups affiliated with the health care profession.  Medical personnel need to be alert to patients that speak of their pets and follow up with a simple "Do you have somebody watching them?" question.  Hospitals and other long-term care facilities, such as rehab units, need to be alert to this need and have  a question on the admission forms regarding pets and available care.  Hospital Social Service personnel need to be aware of groups available to provide "foster care" or "critter sitting services" in the area.
Being a responsible pet owner also means being alert to the need of other pets in your area.  Get together with your local clubs and see what you can do to LINK UP your abilities ad expertise with the people in your area that may need your assistance.
This program is just stretching its wings and getting off of the ground.  If you are already involved in a similar program, please e-mail Charlie's Bird House and share your experiences.
