Reggae star Bob Marley's tragic death in 1981 gave birth to a dream for Jamaican born producer Flip Fraser who was devastated when his idol died of cancer, but it gave him the inspiration needed to create one of the most unique musical productions ever staged . BLACK HEROES was created by Fraser in colloboration with co-producers JD Douglas (lyrics) and Ken Kendricks (music), and is a moving tribute to more than 60 Black men and women and the contributions they have made throughout history toward creating world peace, prosperity, freedom as well as recognition in the world of science, sports and entertainment. Described as a 'live Madame Tussaud's'BLACK HEROES IN THE HALL OF FAME is an explosion of information and culture designed to educate and entertain. Divided into six acts, BLACK HEROES is a musical tableau that brings to life the important figures in Black History : The Kings & Queens of Africa, The Freedom Fighters, The Great Debate featuring Malcolm X, Dr King and Marcus Garvey, The Great Achievers, The Great Entertainers and The Grand Finale. The Production has a cast of 45 actors, singers, dancers and musicians and has broken box office records all across the UK creating a whole new audience for the theatre. The production team for BLACK HEROES also includes Associate Producer Gale Jn-Baptiste and Executive Agent Henry Sellers. The show was launched in London at the Shaw Theatre in July 1987 with the assistance of a grant from Camden Council, to celebrate the Marcus Garvey centenary, and has since gone on to become the most successful Black production in British theatre, creating a whole new generation of theatre goers wherever it plays. The show received rave reviews in Chicago, Washington DC and Detroit during its debut USA tour during Black History Month 1991, and also in Cleveland and Miami during 1994, and has since become a 'must see' event, boasting the highest 'returning audience ratio' for a major theatrical production, with many seeing the show on three or more occasions. |
