Talking about violence

Nowadays, violence has become a very common topic to talk about: when we meet a friend, when having dinner with the family, when we chat with our neighbor or simply when we have a conversation with an acquaintance.

We usually talk about whatˇ¦s happened on the news, whatˇ¦s the weather like, and naturally, we canˇ¦t avoid talking about violence. Thatˇ¦s because violence has become very popular: thereˇ¦s violence everywhere, even in places weˇ¦d never imagine. We neednˇ¦t think violence is whatˇ¦s going on in the mid-East, Colombia or Sudan, what we have in a street fight at the corner of our house, in the recent express-kidnapping cases, in the insults on TV, in the fights in soccer stadiums, etcˇK all these cases are ways of violence too.

I think people are violent or have become more violent due to a need to feel safe. They tend to attack or react violently when they feel fear or threatened, it seems violence is a way to protect themselves. This is something similar to a dog when itˇ¦s scared or threatened; it starts barking to scare away its enemy.

Whatˇ¦s more, there is also a tendency to use violence as a way to solve problems. During the dictatorship, violence was applied in order to scare people and control them. Mafia members may carry guns in order to kill anyone during an argument. There had been wars between two countries whenever they had a conflict.

I think we should avoid violence because it doesnˇ¦t have any benefit. Furthermore, violence usually comes from a previous violent action and it only leads to more violence, so itˇ¦s difficult to say NO. Itˇ¦s not a question of giving up guns and weapons, or making more propaganda to promote peace. Every one of us should stop resorting to violence to solve problems; our society would be more peaceful. If we really want a radical change we shouldnˇ¦t wait for anyone else to do it, but start it first by ourselves.
